A fun thing to do on my computer/phone in a few spare minutes

I take a quick look at the “Explore” tab of the Marginalia search engine. Marginalia is a small, traditional search engine that indexes traditional websites, by which I mean mostly sites that are statically generated and not “single-page applications” (SPAs), things like blogs, wikis, non-corporate news, instruction manuals, free-to-read works of fiction, web comics, and so on. The “Explore” tab shows you some random selection of indexed web pages.

When I want to find something interesting outside the usual internet venues (if you compare modern internet to city we degraded from flourishing agglomerations to neolithic times with two-three places where you can go)... I digressed...
So when I'm bored I use search engines like wiby.me or #Marginalia (search.marginalia.nu/) with simple search queries to find some obscure personal blog and embrace simplicity of #smallnet.
These small search engines aren't great, so you never know what you find. But it will be something small, personal and AI-free.
And if you use StreetPass for Mastodon extension, you'd probably find new people on Mastodon to subscribe to in the process.

#HobbyStreak day 1187+8

Finished stuff. First my #Mordheim or #BloodBowl #Medieval #Marginalia. After some highlighting up the garbage contrast paints and finishing the bases i was quite happy.

Second my ancient #BattleMasters ogre for #RangersOfShadowDeep. He's hideous and has five knuckles on his left fist. But he's fun.

#HobbyStreak day 1168

Dramas with the eldest again for again very low energy. Applied texture paste around the feet of these nerds to hide the pudding bases, among others.

I'm still not sure if this should be a #Mordheim warband or a #BloodBowl team.

It’s Independent Bookshop Week!

I suggest that this is a particularly good week to visit your local independent bookshop and buy some lovely books.

If, however, you are not in easy reach of an independent bookshop, Bookshop is the website which donates 30% of sales revenue to an independent bookshop that you nominate, or 10% of revenue to a pool that supports independent bookshops in general. (They also

Minds in the Margins: Annotators Bringing Books to Life

We recently had a remarkable copy of Apianus’s Cosmographicus liber (1533), a treatise on geography and astronomy. Its value lies in the extensive annotations, especially in the one on leaf XXXIV, shown below. The note corrects the text by adding the name of Columbus as one of America’s discoverers alongside Vespucci, and reports a learned tradition that America was known to Augustan Rome by quoting two lines from the Aeneid.

Peter Harrington Journal - Rare and First Edition Books · Minds in the Margins: Annotators Bringing Books to Life

If you're someone who has gotten used to using natural language queries in search, Marginalia has a great explainer on syntax to use with keyword-based search engines.

"Search terms can be excluded with a hyphen.

Using quotes will cause the search engine to be as literal as possible in interpreting the query.

Parentheses can be used to add terms to the query without giving weight to the terms when ranking the search results.

Samples:
soup -chicken
Look for keywords that contain soup, but not chicken.

"keyboard"
Look for pages containing the exact word keyboard, not keyboards or the like.

"steve mcqueen"
Look for pages containing the exact words steve mcqueen in that order, with no words in between.

apology (plato)
Look for pages containing apology and plato, but only rank them based on their relevance to apology"

My favourite books for children

An idiosyncratic list, although I am sure it contains few surprises...

The good people at Bookshop UK, who provide a website to sell books online which supports local independent bookshops around the country, tell me, "Read It Forward February ... will launch Feb 1st. Simply put, any and all children's book sales during the whole of February will result in a 10% donation

Putting aside quibbles about whether #PhilipKitcher's critique of #analyticPhilosophy is novel, I found #TimothyWilliamson's critique to be the kind of #romanticism, #anecdote, and unsupported speculation that's dissatisfying and deficient to empirically-oriented #philosophers like #Kitcher (see my #marginalia).

If I were #Kitcher, #Williamson's critique may not provoke a single qualm about my latest #book; it may only reinforce my concern about contemporary analytic #philosophy/#philosophers.
