Media Literacy Lesson:
This article uses omission of information and loaded language to imply PM is doing something wrong.
Omission: It does not state why the PM came to this decision
Language: "Trudeau *said*...."
[PM Carney is not Trudeau, and Trudeau is not his boss]

@werd.io #MediaLiteracy has nothing to do with degrees. Even journalists have more and more work to debunk #deepFakes. We must teach methods to check #fakeNews or give help with #factChecks.
#AI was connected to war, power-lust, and unethical funding from the beginning. @emilymbender and @alex "explore AI History, the Cold War, and a Fatally Overhyped Idea in their #book The AI Con: How To Fight Big Tech’s Hype and Create the Future We Want https://lithub.com/on-the-very-real-dangers-of-the-artificial-intelligence-hype-machine/

The rules change when the people in charge are deliberately creating chaos and noise..
Here are six habits from Benjamin Wittes for staying sane during "the screaming"
One of the most important things to know about data is when it isn't
A Filipino reporter exposed a massive disinformation network spreading false claims defending ex-President Duterte after his ICC arrest. Using manual data sleuthing, she uncovered 200+ identical posts framing the arrest as “kidnapping.” A crucial fight against fake news & coordinated influence ops!

I keep seeing tiktoks talking about the issues people travelli to the US are having, and in the comments there are Australians who respond with some form of "Australia is now saying not to travel to the USA because it isn't safe"
..except that Australia isn't saying any such thing, and the US is still listed as green with the advisory "Exercise normal safety precautions".
So I've started asking these people commenting where they found that information, and they're all talking about news stories they've seen and heard in the media... so I asked more questions..
These people believe that the news media is run by the government.
I am not joking. I've had multiple people in the last week explaining to me that the news media is literally the government informing the population - not in a "we're reporting on this official statement given by the Australian government" way, but in a "this story is written by the government" way.
Media literacy is dead.
CONF: On May 8, 2025, the University of Fribourg hosts „The (Ab)use of AI-Generated Images“, a conference exploring the ethical, legal, and societal implications of synthetic visuals in journalism, law, and art.
How do we legislate images that blur authorship, reality, and intent?

The surge of ai and its ignorance of taste, making things better by adding more, and so on, is correlating with the average lack of consideration for #creation, #art and #artists and global #antiintellectualism ; highlighting global reluctance to partake into any activity requiring to think by oneself. #literacy #criticalthinking #CriticalLiteracy #literacyMatters #ai #artificialintelligence #medialiteracy #populism #facism
This is how media becomes complicit in the rise of the far right.
There is no good journalistic reason to promote Le Pen's outrage over the verdict as a standalone story.
Doing so creates the very "boost" another piece here suggests will come to pass.
It doesn't feed the flame; it *is* the flame.
When evaluating some random claim someone makes on the Internet, you can ask yourself:
- Do they say *how they know this*? Do they have a link to an article or mention a book or person you can look up?
- For claims about a historical event, is any date and place given?
Now, of course, any random person can write a blog post or article saying anything they want. There are many ways to evaluate how trustworthy an article is—including asking the questions above. But let's take small steps for now!

#AI follows the #MassMediaPrinciples. The most significant one in this context is:
All #MassMedia contain values, beliefs, and ideologies. These reflect conscious & unconscious biases. #MediaLiteracy

"The fake photo was amplified by large accounts outside Canada, including by a French conspiracy theorist affiliated with a conspiratorial media outlet that has hosted Éric Zemmour and figures from his far-right Reconquête party, as well as a media personality from a British far-right conspiracy outlet."
Do more of that, and we’ll see far less baseless speculation and controversy bait posted online.
And while you should get better at identifying reliable sources as your knowledge of a field grows, still be skeptical if a story sounds too ‘convenient’. After all, there’s no better way to trick someone that tell them exactly what they want (or expect) to hear…
