MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History May 19, 1850: Four thousand Mexican and Peruvian workers gathered in Sonora, California, to protest the "Foreign Miners' Tax," enacted to drive them from gold fields. 500 armed vigilantes (mostly tax collectors and Anglo miners), chased them off by firing into the crowd. The tax was imposed during the height of the 1849 Gold Rush, and in the wake of the Mexican-American War (1848), in which the U.S. seized California from Mexico. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Feb 1848) gave U.S. citizenship to Mexican nationals who were living in California at the time the treaty was signed. However, the U.S. denied citizenship to Indigenous Peoples until the 1930s, even if they had also been Mexican nationals prior to the war. Meanwhile, English, Irish, and German immigrants protested the new tax and got it amended to exempt any miner who was a “free white person.” The effects of the tax, and the racist violence that accompanied it, was to drive large numbers of Latin American and Chinese miners from the gold fields. This exodus, in turn, caused a sharp drop in rents and commerce for the landlords and store owners who catered to the miners. They lobbied for repealing the tax, and were successful in 1851.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexicanamerican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mexicanamerican</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/immigration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>immigration</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mining</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/california" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>california</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/gold" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gold</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexico" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mexico</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/vigilantes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vigilantes</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/peruvian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>peruvian</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/chinese" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chinese</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/guadalupehidalgo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>guadalupehidalgo</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/indigenous" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indigenous</span></a></p>

Flipboard Science Desk<p>Last month, President Trump signed an executive order promoting deep sea mining in U.S. and international waters. Less than a week later, a U.S. subsidiary of the Canadian deep-sea mining corporation called The Metals Company submitted its first applications to explore and exploit polymetallic nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone. If approved, the company could be the first to mine in international waters. But ocean advocates say the risks of mining far outweigh the benefits of maintaining a healthy deep sea ecosystem.<br>InsideClimateNews.com reports: </p><p><a href="https://flip.it/GaNvOH" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flip.it/GaNvOH</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Science" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Science</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/ClimateChange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateChange</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Ocean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ocean</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Mining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mining</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History May 18, 1928: Big Bill Haywood died in exile in the Soviet Union. He was a founding member and leader of both the Western Federation of Miners and the IWW (the Wobblies). During the first two decades of the 20th century, he participated in the Colorado Labor Wars and the textiles strikes in Lawrence and Patterson. The Pinkertons tried, but failed, to bust him for the murder of former Idaho governor Frank Steunenberg. However, in 1918, the feds used the Espionage Act to convict him, and 101 other Wobblies, for their anti-war activity. As a result, they sentenced him to twenty years in prison. But instead of serving the time, he fled to the Soviet Union, damaging his image as a hero among the Wobblies. He ultimately died from a stroke related to his alcoholism and diabetes. Half his ashes were buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis. The other half of his ashes were sent to Chicago and buried near the Haymarket Martyrs’ Monument.</p><p>You can read my full article on union busting by the Pinkertons here: <a href="https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2024/04/04/union-busting-by-the-pinkertons/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">michaeldunnauthor.com/2024/04/</span><span class="invisible">04/union-busting-by-the-pinkertons/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/IWW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IWW</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/union" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>union</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/strike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>strike</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BigBillHaywood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BigBillHaywood</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>soviet</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/haymarket" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>haymarket</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/kremlin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kremlin</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sabotage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sabotage</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mining</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History May 5, 1931: The Infamous Battle of Harlan County, Kentucky occurred. Also known as the Battle of Evarts, the strike began in response to wage cuts implemented in February. On May 5, a scab accosted a union worker, resulting in three deaths. Governor Flem Sampson called in the National Guard, which killed several more union miners. The Harlan County class war was the inspiration for Florence Reece's famous union song "Which Side Are You On?" The strike continued for years, with the miners finally winning in 1940. </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPFY8CwAKU0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=SPFY8CwAKU</span><span class="invisible">0</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/strike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>strike</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/union" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>union</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/florencereece" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>florencereece</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WhichSideAreYouOn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WhichSideAreYouOn</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/scab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>scab</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/massacre" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>massacre</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/harlancounty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>harlancounty</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/kentucky" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kentucky</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/coal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>coal</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mining</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/wages" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wages</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/classwar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>classwar</span></a></p>
DoomsdaysCW<p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SodiumBatteries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SodiumBatteries</span></a> offer an alternative to tricky <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lithium" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lithium</span></a></p><p>Lithium is relatively scarce and mostly refined in China. Sodium is neither</p><p>Oct 26th 2023</p><p>Excerpt: "Fortunately, lithium is not the only game in town. As we report this week, a clutch of firms are making batteries based on sodium, lithium’s elemental cousin. Since sodium’s chemical properties are very similar to those of lithium, it too makes for good batteries. And sodium, which is found in the salt in seawater, is thousands of times more abundant on Earth than lithium and cheaper to get at. Most of the companies using sodium to make batteries today are also Chinese. But pursuing the technology in the West might be a surer route to energy security than relying heavily on lithium. </p><p>"Besides its abundance, sodium has other advantages. The best lithium batteries use <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/cobalt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cobalt</span></a> and 3nickel in their electrodes. Nickel, like lithium, is in short supply. <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Mining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mining</span></a> it on land is <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/environmentally" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>environmentally</span></a> destructive. Proposals to grab it from the <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/seabed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>seabed</span></a> instead have caused rows. A good deal of the world’s cobalt, meanwhile, is extracted from small mines in the Democratic Republic of <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Congo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Congo</span></a>, where child labour is common and working conditions are dire. Sodium batteries, by contrast, can use electrodes built from iron and manganese, which are plentiful and uncontroversial. Since the chemical components are cheap, a scaled-up industry should be able to produce batteries that cost less than their lithium counterparts. </p><p>"Sodium is not a perfect replacement for lithium. It is heavier, meaning sodium batteries will weigh more than lithium ones of an equivalent capacity. That is likely to rule them out in some cases where lightness is paramount. But for other applications, such as grid storage or home batteries, weight is irrelevant. Several Chinese carmakers are even beginning to put sodium batteries in electric vehicles.</p><p>"Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of sodium batteries is their late start. <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LithiumIon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LithiumIon</span></a> batteries were first commercialised in the 1990s and have benefited from decades of investment. But the rest of the world is behind China on both fronts anyway. America and the European Union have announced enormous programmes of green industrial subsidies. If they are determined to bankroll batteries, some of the pot should go to sodium."</p><p>Read more:<br><a href="https://www.economist.com/leaders/2023/10/26/sodium-batteries-offer-an-alternative-to-tricky-lithium" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">economist.com/leaders/2023/10/</span><span class="invisible">26/sodium-batteries-offer-an-alternative-to-tricky-lithium</span></a></p><p>Archived version:<br><a href="https://archive.ph/7x6JX#" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">archive.ph/7x6JX#</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SolarPunkSunday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SolarPunkSunday</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/DeepSeaMining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DeepSeaMining</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NoLithiumMining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NoLithiumMining</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LeaveItInTheOcean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LeaveItInTheOcean</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LeaveItInTheOcean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LeaveItInTheOcean</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LithiumAlternatives" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LithiumAlternatives</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SodiumBatteries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SodiumBatteries</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RenewablesNow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RenewablesNow</span></a></p>
