Dear @Mer__edith and the the amazing @signalapp team,
After the last update, the Signal "desktop app" is requiring us to launch the mobile app - however, many of us do not have the Android or any other "mobile" version of the Signal app any more.
We are a large (by our standards) group of #Linux phone users, and your "desktop" app is our "mobile" app : )
Our previous phones on which #SignalApp was initially activated was an Android or Apple device and we have since then completely migrated to #Linuxphones. Some of us may have registered Signal on #signalcli, Flare, #Molly, Signal Android in #WayDroid, etc.
The #mobileLinux community is growing - we have members spanning a good number of projects and devices, e.g.
- @purism #Librem5 and #LibertyPhone running #Debian-based #PureOS #GnuLinux, #Alpine-based #PostmarketOS or #Mobian,
- @PINE64 #Pinephone and PP Pro running #ManjaroARM, #SailfishOS, etc.
- @furilabs #FLX1 running #Droidian-based #FuriOS,
- a wide variety of Android phones (including OnePlus 6, Google Pixel 3, #Fairphone 4 & 5) running #Alpine-based @postmarketOS ,
- @volla , #Fxtec and #Brax3 devices running #UbuntuTouch by @ubports,
- devices running @mobian which is part of #Debian project, etc.
[Apologies to any project I may have failed to include - you are all appreciated]

@scy They're all pretty bad. Threema has some major issues with their encryption protocol: https://infosec.exchange/@Fiona@blahaj.zone/114083506772906117
Delta Chat outright lacks forward secrecy, and also doesn't use post-quantum cryptography.
XMPP and IRC are a mess, and essentially unusable for less technical users.
When considering or recommending a messenger, always ask yourself: Would your grandma be able to use it? If she encountered some issue, would she be able to find someone, other than you, who could fix it? That unfortunately rules out a bunch of messengers.
I think best option is to use the @mollyim client for Signal. The second best choice would be @simplex
@bjb @ben You can use #molly, the security enhanced version, it's compatible w signal...essentially is signal I guess https://droidify.eu.org/app/?id=im.molly.app&repo_address=https://molly.im/fdroid/foss/fdroid/repo

I got a #MollymaukTealeaf tattoo!!! Finished the shading this week! I love it so much. And now I love having a leg tattoo so much that I’m going to add swords and more peacock feathers below it! #criticalrole #dnd #molly #tiefling #infernal #tattoo
@clement_la_baleine @niavy @Freyja

Oh look, it's my old friend Molly, with a body for a face and face for a body!
Irish Origins of the Myth of the Molly Maguires
According to legend, there was a widow living in Ireland in the 1840s named Molly Maguire,
who hated the landlords who were abusing the poor tenant farmers.
She supposedly carried a pistol strapped to each thigh.
She, or her followers, would beat or murder the tyrannical landlords, their agents, and bailiffs, whenever they tried to evict a tenant.
No one knows if she ever really existed, but other tenant farmer activists were said to cry out,
“Take that from a son of Molly Maguire!” when protesting against unscrupulous landlords.

However, there is no evidence that an organization called the Molly Maguires ever existed in the U.S.
James McParland, an #agent #provocateur who worked for the Pinkerton Detective Agency,
and who provided the plans and weapons the men purportedly used in their crimes,
provided the only serious evidence against the men.
The entire legal process was a travesty:
a private corporation (the #Reading #Railroad ) set up the investigation through a private police force (the #Pinkerton #Detective #Agency ) and prosecuted them with their own company attorneys.
No jurors were Irish, though several were recent German immigrants who had trouble understanding the proceedings.
Nearly everything people “know” today about the Molly Maguires comes from Allan Pinkerton’s own work of #fiction,
"The Molly Maguires and the Detectives" (1877),
which he marketed as nonfiction.
His heavily biased book was the primary source for dozens of academic works, and for several pieces of fiction, including Arthur Conan Doyle’s final Sherlock Holmes novel, "Valley of Fear" (1915), and the 1970 Sean Connery film, "Molly Maguires."
The Day of the Rope
The Molly Maguires became international news on June 21, 1877, when the authorities hanged ten Irish miners in a single day in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
Known as #Black #Thursday, or Day of the Rope, it was the second largest mass execution in U.S. history.
(The largest was in 1862, when the U.S. government executed 38 Dakota warriors).
The authorities accused the Irishmen of being terrorists from a secret organization called the #Molly #Maguires.
They executed ten more over the next two years, and imprisoned another twenty suspected Molly Maguires.
Most of the convicted men were #union #activists.
Some even held public office, as #sheriffs and #school #board members.

We are remembering two #rabbits today.
10 years ago, Nov 4 2013, we lost lovely #Roo, the white boy with honeycomb dipped lop ears. We found him in the snow one New Year, and never knew his age, but guess he was 2 to 2 and a half when he died. But he got to go to the seaside!
Then, spooky coincidence, exactly 5 years later, Nov 4, 2018, we lost Roo's widow #Molly (who became wifebun to our #Jack), aged 8 and a half. She's the grey minilop, a bit of a mobile sausage really with a big skirt of grey fur on her backside, a matriarchal bullet head!
I'm keeping a close eye on #Jack rabbit today. It's nearly his 10-year Gotcha. We rescued him for Molly after we lost Roo. He was 18 months so he's almost 11 and a half, the old man!
