Sentence first<p><strong>Werner Herzog on the OED: ‘the book of books’</strong></p><p>In my last post, about filmmaker and author <a href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/2025/02/25/werner-herzog-on-his-voice-and-its-mimics/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Werner Herzog’s voice and its mimics</a>, I promised an anecdote about the <em>Oxford English Dictionary</em>. That appears below with two shorter bits from Herzog’s recent memoir, <em>Every Man for Himself and God Against All</em>.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/702776/every-man-for-himself-and-god-against-all-by-werner-herzog-translated-by-michael-hofmann/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">publisher’s page</a> for the book, I forgot to say before, has an excerpt read by Herzog, if that sounds like something you’d like to listen to.</p><p>That the <em>OED</em> is for Herzog ‘the book of books’ does not surprise me, given his love of learning and literature and his admiration for diligence and excellence. But he brings it up unexpectedly, in a medley passage in which he muses on his habits and nature:</p><p></p><blockquote><p>I avoid contact with fans. Occasionally, I watch trash TV because I think the poet shouldn’t avert his eyes. I want to know what others aspire to. I’m a good but limited cook. My steaks are excellent, but they’ll never touch what you can get on any street corner in Argentina. Tree huggers are suspicious to me. Yoga classes for five-year-olds—which in California are a thing—are suspicious to me. I don’t use social media. If you see my profile anywhere there, you can be sure it’s a fake. I don’t use a smartphone. I never quite trust the media, so I get a truer picture of the political situation by going to multiple sources—the Western media, Al Jazeera, Russian TV, and occasionally by downloading the whole of a politician’s speech. I trust the <em>Oxford English Dictionary</em>, which is one of mankind’s greatest cultural achievements. I mean the one in twenty massive volumes with six hundred thousand entries and more than three million quotations culled from all over the English-speaking world and over a thousand years. I reckon thousands of researchers and amateur helpers spent 150 years combing through everything recorded. For me, it is the book of books, the one I would take to a desert island. It is inexhaustible, a miracle. The first time I visited Oliver Sacks on Wards Island north of Manhattan, I had mislaid the house number but knew the name of the little street. It was evening, winter-time; the slightly sloping street was icy. I parked and tiptoed along the icy pavement looking into every lit-up home. None of the windows had curtains. Through one window I saw a man sprawled on a sofa with one of the hefty volumes of the <em>OED</em> propped on his chest. I knew that had to be him, and so it was. Our first subject was the dictionary; for him as well, it was the book of books.</p></blockquote><p>(The translation from the German is by Michael Hofmann.)</p><p>I am utterly won over by the image of Herzog tiptoeing along an icy street in search of Oliver Sacks, peering into windows until he recognises him thanks to the dictionary they both adored. <a href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/2019/04/10/the-most-coveted-and-desirable-book-in-the-world/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Oliver Sacks considered the <em>OED</em></a> ‘the most coveted and desirable book in the world’.</p><p>Of artist and photographer Lena Herzog, Werner’s wife, he writes:</p><blockquote><p>We speak neither German nor Russian with each other because it has turned out that it is good for us to meet on a plane that is neither all hers nor all mine. It makes us both careful in a language that was originally neither of ours.</p></blockquote><p>I find this fascinating. Most mixed-language couples would use one or the other’s first language in their interpersonal communication, or they may alternate, depending on fluency, context, perhaps the power dynamic, and so on. The Herzogs, though they could speak their native German or Russian to each other, instead reach for more neutral ground and are linguistically skilled enough to have that option.</p> <a href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/werner-herzog-languages-modern-greek.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"></a><p></p><p>Herzog muses on his languages, from the video clip linked below.</p> <p>Finally, Herzog touches on the topic of classical languages. He was educated at the Maximilian Gymnasium in Munich, where he felt like a stranger:</p><blockquote><p>The school enjoyed a distinguished reputation. In addition to offering eight years of Latin and six of Greek, it set high standards in math, physics, literature, and art. Two of the great theoretical physicists of the twentieth century, Max Planck and Werner Heisenberg, had studied here. It’s hard to explain the point of dead languages to people today. Latin, in a pinch, but only for lawyers, theologians, and historians. In purely practical terms, these languages are useless. But their study gave us a profounder understanding of the origins of Western culture, of literature, of philosophy, of the deepest currents of our understanding of the world we live in.</p></blockquote><p>This can serve to accompany a popular clip of Herzog, with which I’ll conclude the post. He’s asked how many languages he speaks, and his answer takes a characteristically wild turn, into a story <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2022/01/werner-herzog-will-not-speak-french.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">only partly</a> true:</p> <p><strong>See the&nbsp;<em>Sentence first </em>archives for more on <a href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/film/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">language and film</a>, or <a href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/oed/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the <em>OED</em></a>.</strong></p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/autobiography/" target="_blank">#autobiography</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/books/" target="_blank">#books</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/dictionaries/" target="_blank">#dictionaries</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/film/" target="_blank">#film</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/greek/" target="_blank">#Greek</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/latin/" target="_blank">#Latin</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/memoir/" target="_blank">#memoir</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/multilingual/" target="_blank">#multilingual</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/multilingualism/" target="_blank">#multilingualism</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/oed/" target="_blank">#OED</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/oliver-sacks/" target="_blank">#OliverSacks</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/relationships/" target="_blank">#relationships</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/stories/" target="_blank">#stories</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stancarey.wordpress.com/tag/werner-herzog/" target="_blank">#WernerHerzog</a></p>

EmmiI like it that Finland is a duo-lingual country. Swedish-speakers are a small minority (about 5-6% of the population), but there are areas and towns that are very Swedish-speaking. I'm at Dalsbruk, Taalintehdas, and here, most of the population speak Swedish as their first language. In some areas on the West coast of Finland, some people might not speak Finnish at all or quite poorly. I don't think it's a problem but rather find it quite intriguing. My Swedish is so elementary that I am, and should be (!), embarrassed. <br> <br> Hooray multilingual world! 💜<br> <br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/dalsbruk?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#dalsbruk</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/taalintehdas?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#taalintehdas</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/languages?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#languages</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bilingual?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bilingual</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Finnish?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Finnish</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Swedish?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Swedish</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Finland?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Finland</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/goodmorning?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#goodmorning</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/multilingual?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#multilingual</a>
Strong Language<p><strong>Pornhub’s WOTY</strong></p><a href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pornhub_map.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"></a> <p>Readers of this blog are probably familiar with the various Word of the Year (WOTY) competitions run by dictionaries and linguistic organizations. But they may not know that the site <em>Pornhub.com</em> has its own WOTY project of sorts. Each year Pornhub publishes a statistical analysis of its users, and in addition to providing global demographic data about who uses the site and when, it publishes the top and trending search terms used on it. </p> <p><a href="https://www.pornhub.com/insights/2024-year-in-review" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The 2024 analysis can be found here</a>. [Note that the analysis itself is not pornographic, but beware of clicking links within it as those may lead you to NSFW pages. Moreover, one may not want to visit this link on a work computer, as your IT department may notify your boss that you’ve visited Pornhub.]</p><p><strong><em>Hentai</em></strong>, sexually explicit cartoons in the style of Japanese manga, was the site’s no.1 search term again this year, with <strong><em>MILF</em></strong>, an acronym for a <em>mom I’d like to fuck</em>, also holding position at no.2. Demonstrating Pornhub’s global reach is the no.3 term, <strong><em>Pinay</em></strong>, referring to a Filipina, climbing from no.5 last year. On <em>Pornhubgay.com</em>, the top three terms remained unchanged from last year: <strong><em>twink</em></strong>, a man of youthful and slim appearance, at no.1, <strong><em>anime</em></strong> at no.2, and <em>Pinay’s</em> masculine counterpart <strong><em>Pinoy</em></strong> at no.3. &nbsp;</p><p></p><p>But the real interest is in what terms trended this past year, search terms that reflected other societal trends. The biggest trend clocked by Pornhub was <strong><em>demure</em></strong>, inspired by a 2 August TikTok viral video in which creator Jools Lebron described her hair and makeup as “very demure.” Lebron’s TikTok video was not overtly sexual, much less pornographic, but evidently it kicked off a trend in Pornhub searches, which included <em>demure</em> itself (+133%), <strong><em>mindful pleasure</em></strong> (+112%), and <strong><em>mindful JOI</em></strong> (+87%). <em>JOI</em> being an initialism for <em>jerk-off instructions</em>, a video in which a performer addresses the viewer, giving instructions on how to pleasure themselves and describing, and sometimes performing, various sexual acts themselves.</p><p>The tradwife phenomenon and the <em>Secret Lives of Mormon Wives</em> TV show also spawned a Pornhub trend: <strong><em>Mormon threesome</em></strong> (+122%), <strong><em>Mormon sex</em></strong> (+92%), <strong><em>tradwife</em></strong> (+72%), and <strong><em>Mormon wife</em></strong> (+71%). All this while Pornhub is largely blocked in Utah.</p><p>People were evidently lusting after Olympic athletes, too. In the third quarter of the year, corresponding to the Paris Olympics, the trending terms included: <strong><em>vollyball</em></strong> [<em>sic</em>] (+165%), <strong><em>swimmer</em></strong> (+101%), and the generic <strong><em>athlete</em></strong> (+88%).</p><p>In an American Dialect Society/Pornhub WOTY crossover, the phrase <strong><em>hawk tuah</em></strong>, coined in a viral YouTube video in which a woman used it describe spitting on a penis during oral sex, was one of the nominees for the ADS WOTY in the Most Fun While It Lasted category. On Pornhub, <em>hawk tuah</em> got over ten million searches, and <strong><em>spit on dick</em></strong> rose +233%.</p><p>One of the more fun analyses that Pornhub does is a map that shows for each US state the search term that is most popular relative to the other states. So, <strong><em>furry</em></strong> is relatively popular in Oregon, <strong><em>pee</em></strong> takes the honors for Wisconsin, <strong><em>friends mom</em></strong> in California, <strong><em>footjob</em></strong> in Colorado, <strong><em>anal dildo</em></strong> in Alaska, and <strong><em>facesitting</em></strong> in Massachusetts.</p><p>Pornhub has a global reach, and it also publishes the most popular search terms for the top twenty countries. In the United States, <strong><em>hentai</em></strong> was the most popular term, climbing from no.3 last year, <strong><em>Latina</em></strong> took second, climbing from no.4, and <strong><em>MILF</em></strong> slipped one spot from no.2 to no.3. In France, the top three search terms remained unchanged. Unsurprisingly, <strong><em>francaise</em></strong> was no.1, but foreign terms challenged the country’s linguistic nationalism, with <strong><em>hentai</em></strong> and <strong><em>MILF</em></strong> coming in second and third, respectively. In the Philippines, <strong><em>Pinay</em></strong> and <strong><em>Pinoy</em></strong> unsurprisingly took the top two spots, with <strong><em>Japanese</em></strong> coming in third, all unchanged from last year. In Mexico, it was <strong><em>hentai</em></strong> and <strong><em>lesbianas</em></strong>, unchanged in the top two spots, with <strong><em>culonas</em></strong> (big ass) displacing <strong><em>MILF</em></strong> at no.3. And in the United Kingdom, <strong><em>MILF</em></strong> and <strong><em>lesbian</em></strong> continued to hold the top two spots, but <strong><em>British</em></strong> moved up two places, displacing <strong><em>Indian</em></strong>. <em>British</em> has been moving up the search rankings in recent years, perhaps reflecting some kind of post-Brexit xenophobia.</p><p>But overall, when one looks at the top search terms in the twenty countries, one is struck by how similar the lists are. Evidently tastes in porn genres do not vary all that much around the world. What is interesting, however, is which non-anglophone countries tend to use English terms and which use their native tongues. English terms dominate in the Philippines, Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands. Egypt has a mix of English and Arabic search terms. While France, Japan, Ukraine, Brazil, and Spanish-speaking countries tend to search in their native languages.</p><p>All of this leads one to ask, is porn a universal language, a lingua franca that unites rather than divides? Probably not, but with everything else going on in the world, it may provide some kind of common ground.</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/anime/" target="_blank">#anime</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/furry/" target="_blank">#furry</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/hentai-2/" target="_blank">#hentai</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/internet/" target="_blank">#internet</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/language/" target="_blank">#language</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/milf/" target="_blank">#milf</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/mindful/" target="_blank">#mindful</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/mormon/" target="_blank">#Mormon</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/multilingual/" target="_blank">#multilingual</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/pinay/" target="_blank">#pinay</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/pinoy/" target="_blank">#pinoy</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/pop-culture/" target="_blank">#popCulture</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/pornhub/" target="_blank">#pornhub</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/pornography/" target="_blank">#pornography</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/relationships/" target="_blank">#relationships</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/sexual-slang/" target="_blank">#sexualSlang</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/slang/" target="_blank">#slang</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/tradwife/" target="_blank">#tradwife</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/twink/" target="_blank">#twink</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://stronglang.wordpress.com/tag/woty/" target="_blank">#WOTY</a></p>

🌻 Farah :neuro: :v_bi:<p>Of course we wanted our kid to learn both English and Bangla. We adopted the divide and conquer strategy- each of us speaks only one language with him. I’m not naming names, but one of us dropped the ball, now the kid can only speak in English. At least he can count to 10 in Bangla! 🤷🏻‍♀️ <a href="https://beige.party/tags/multilingual" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>multilingual</span></a></p>
