@ajsadauskas@pixelfed.social A bit more on this forgotten moment of Australian sporting history:

"It was pandemonium. About 15,000 people were at Parramatta Leagues club and its immediate surrounds. Players were lifted from the team bus into the club by elated fans.

"The fence pickets that weren’t souvenired had been piled together to make a bonfire.

"The fence pickets went up. The grandstand, a wooden heap built in the 1930s, soon followed. The scoreboard at the southern end was ablaze. It was a fibro structure set on two metres of brick with a clock on top, which a group of men tried feverishly to rip free for a keepsake before giving up and leaving it to burn.

"The goalposts were added to the bonfire, after one fan tried to climb to the top of them to get a flag. The man was still atop one pole as they fell, yet ran away and into legend. Advertising hoardings were ripped free and torched, taking chunks out of the fence.

"Firemen and police eventually broke up the party. When they returned the next day, Cumberland Oval was a smouldering ruin, the grandstand a charred carcass."

And that's why there's a statue of a bus in the main town square in Parramatta.

Central Coast Health is advising people to be alert for signs and symptoms of measles after being notified of three cases who were infectious while visiting several locations in the Central Coast, #Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas.

One of the cases, who is unvaccinated, recently returned from Vietnam, where there is an ongoing large-scale outbreak of measles. The cases are known to each other.

People who attended the following locations at the specified times should watch for the development of symptoms.

📌Go Vita Lake Haven shopping centre
▪ Sunday 2 March 2025, 11am – 2pm
▪ Sunday 16 March 2025, 10am – 4pm

LAKE MACQUARIE:
📌Charlestown soccer ground
▪ Saturday 1 March 2025, 2pm – 5pm

📌Belmont Hospital Emergency Department
▪ Monday 10 March 2025, 10.30am – 8:30pm
▪ Sunday 23 March 2025, 11am – 6pm

📌Go Vita Mount Hutton shopping centre
▪ Monday 17 March 2025, 11am – 5pm

Anyone who visited the above locations at those times should monitor for symptoms.

“It can take up to 21 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it’s important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms until the dates indicated.

“If you develop symptoms, please call ahead to your GP or emergency department to ensure you do not spend time in the waiting room with other patients.

Abusing beaches as highways

"Overcrowding due to a surge in visitors at some of Queensland's pristine beaches has raised safety and environmental concerns.Reports of offences including reckless driving, littering and even defecating have increased at 4WD beaches in recent years amid a domestic tourism boom."

Sea foam - You wouldn’t go swimming in sewage

"Research shows people should not go in the sea when it is foaming. These bacterial smoothies can contain more harmful pathogens than a sewage treatment plant – and you wouldn’t go swimming in sewage."

"If the water is polluted with floating fats and grease as well as asphaltene, motor oil and hydrocarbons, these spores soon form bacterial colonies or biofilms that go forth and multiply."

"Reducing stormwater pollution will reduce the growth of sea foams. As long as humanity continues to produce pollution, the problem will increase. It will also worsen as the world warms, because sea foams like it hot."

@ajsadauskas@pixelfed.social Some background on this project.

Sydney Metro West is a ~24km (14.9 mi) automated train line

When it's completed in 2032, it will connect the two main downtown areas in the Greater Sydney metropolitan area: the Sydney CBD and Parramatta.

It will also feature 8 (and potentially 10) other stations, including Sydney Olympic Park (where the 2000 Olympics were held), Parramatta's Westmead hospital precinct, and urban renewal precincts like Rose Bay.

One of those stops is at North Burwood in Sydney's inner-west, roughly half way between the Sydney CBD and Parramatta.

The southern end of Burwood has become a hub for Sydney's Chinese community.

It features a bustling Chinatown precinct, with night markets, many restaurants, and new apartment blocks. It's served by a train station, with two indoor urban shopping centres within walking distance.

The metro station aims to bring some of that dynamism to the northern end of Burwood Rd.

The local city council recently adopted a masterplan outlining its vision for urban renewal in the area, which you can see here: participate.burwood.nsw.gov.au

It will see new public parks, apartments, and retail businesses built within a short walk of the new station.

Good morning tooters. When oh when is the weather going to cool. I had my hopes up, but it’s going to be in the 30’s for another week - 33c for today & it’s 20c already.
It’s a bit of a busy day for me today so I have to get moving. After I’m showered I will take the dogs for a walk stopping off to feed the animals at the other house. After which I’ll bring the dogs back to here & head into Wodonga to give my own garden a very good soaking to tide it over for the last couple of days in Chiltern. I will visit my sister for a while before I come back out here. She was expecting a visit from our younger sister & family who are making their way back from Sydney via a stop off at Mt Hotham where they are now held up for most of day with a road closure due to a bike race. So they won’t be stopping in at all, not even for a short while . My older sister is very disappointed & personally I have my own thoughts about it, but will keep them to myself. #Family
Have a great #Sunday people, keep cool out there & stay safe my pocket friends in #Queensland & northern #NSW

ABC News · Tropical Cyclone Alfred expected to 'pack a punch' as it edges towards Queensland coastBy Shari Hams

Folks preparing for #TropicalCycloneAlfred , as an old north #Queensland er who has been through several cyclones, I can’t emphasise this enough: wheel your wheelie bins INSIDE your garage.

“But”, I hear you cry, “it doesn’t matter to me if my wheelie bin gets wet or even broken!”

Ok, but do you care if the bin, and everything in it gets picked up and SMASHED HARD into the side of your house, possibly right on your windows?

So bring them in. And if you can’t bring them in, tie their lids shut, and tie them down.

And also, go to your yard and reevaluate anything you left out with the above criteria in mind this time.

Cheers,
An old FNQ fart now in #Brisbane

Pass it on to your Northern #NSW friends, too.
