MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History June 1, 1916: The predominantly immigrant iron miners of the Mesabi Range, Minnesota, participated in a seemingly spontaneous strike in response to overpriced housing and goods, long hours and poor pay. The group was led by radical Finns who quickly drew the attention and aid of the IWW. Wobbly organizers, including Carlo Tresca, Joe Schmidt, Frank Little, and later Joe Ettor and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, came to help local strike leaders draw up a list of demands which included an 8-hour day, timed from when workers entered the mine until they were outside; a pay-scale based upon the actual hours worked; paydays twice monthly; immediate back-pay for hours worked upon severance; abolition of the Saturday night shift; abolition of the hated contract mining system. In the Contract Mining system, the bosses hired and paid “skilled” miners to do most of the mining. The contract miners then had to hire their own laborers and pay them out of their meagre wages. The contract miners were often native-born people, while the laborers were usually immigrants. This created a racialized two-tiered system that divided the workers and made it harder to organize. The bosses would routinely offer the contract miners a small concession to get them back to work, while offering the even more poorly paid laborers nothing, destroying their solidarity and ending the strike. Flynn would later go on to cofound the American Civil Liberties Union. Tresca would go on to became a leading organizer against both fascism and Stalinism. He was assassinated in 1943, possibly on orders of the Genovese crime family, possibly on orders of Stalin, and possibly Italian fascists. Frank Little, who was Native American, was later murdered by vigilantes during a strike in Butte. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History June 1, 1873: Captain Jack (Kintpuash), who led a band of 52 Modoc warriors against the U.S. army near Tule Lake, California, finally surrendered to U.S. troops. The fight was part of the Modoc Wars, in which the Modoc tribe (southern Oregon and Northern California) resisted domination by the U.S. This was the most expensive Indian War in US history. Initially, the Modocs were highly successful, at least until the U.S. brought in significant reinforcements, encircled them, starved them out, leading many of Captain Jack’s own warriors to join with the U.S. forces to help capture him. It was also the only time Indigenous Americans killed a U.S. general. For decades, Kintpuash’s head was displayed in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.</p><p>In 1863, the U.S. Army built Fort Klamath, just north of the Oregon border. Hundreds of Civil War veterans spent their days and evenings there getting drunk because there wasn’t anything else to do there. The army had forced Captain Jack and a hundred other Modocs to leave Tule Lake and live on the Klamath reservation. However, the Klamath Indians mistreated the Modocs. And the U.S. soldiers raided the reservation and raped Modoc women. So, Captain Jack returned to Tule Lake with the hundred Modocs he had brought with him, plus another 300 who had been living on the reservation before he got there. </p><p>When they returned to Tule Lake, they found even more white men than when they had left, and they didn’t want the Modocs around. They demanded that the Army return Captain Jack and his people to the reservation. The army surrounded the Modocs and sent in a peace delegation to negotiate a return to the reservation. Captain Jack initially wanted to make peace with the U.S. government because he knew Washington would continue to send soldiers and they’d never be able to win. But several of his chiefs disagreed. They knew that if they made peace, they’d be betrayed, as had happened so many times before. Realizing his chiefs would make war with the U.S., with or without his support, he chose to fight. So, at the next peace commission, Captain Jack shot and killed General Canby, the only general to ever die in the Indian wars. The other members of the delegation fled. </p><p>The Lava Beds were a natural fortress, with hundreds of caves and tunnels that were well-known to the Modocs. The night of the U.S. assault, a dense fog moved in from Tule Lake. The U.S. soldiers couldn’t see, yet they proceeded anyway. Modoc sharpshooters hid in crevasses and behind natural lava breastworks. They picked off the U.S. soldiers, one by one. In all, the Modocs killed 83 U.S. soldiers and volunteers, including 7 officers. The army killed 17 Modoc warriors, women and children. But eventually the U.S. brought in enough soldiers to surround the Modocs and starve them out, ultimately winning the war.</p><p>You read my complete biography of Kintpuash here: <a href="https://michaeldunnauthor.com/2021/04/23/captain-jack/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">michaeldunnauthor.com/2021/04/</span><span class="invisible">23/captain-jack/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/indigenous" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indigenous</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nativeamerican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeamerican</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/captainjack" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>captainjack</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/modoc" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>modoc</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/indianwars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indianwars</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/kintpuash" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kintpuash</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/genocide" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>genocide</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/tulelake" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tulelake</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Writing History May 22, 1927: Author Peter Matthiessen was born. Matthiessen was an environmental activist and a CIA officer who wrote short stories, novels and nonfiction. He’s the only writer to have won the National Book award in both nonfiction, for The Snow Leopard (1979), and in fiction, for Shadow Country (2008). His story Travelin’ Man was made into the film The Young One (1960) by Luis Bunuel. Perhaps his most famous book was, In the Spirit of Crazy Horse (1983), which tells the story of Leonard Peltier and the FBI’s war on the American Indian Movement. The former governor of South Dakota, Bill Janklow, and David Price, an FBI agent who was at the Wounded Knee assault, both sued Viking Press for libel because of statements in the book. Both lawsuits threatened to undermine free speech and further stifle indigenous rights activism. Fortunately, both lawsuits were dismissed. Peltier spent over 43 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. On January 19, 2025, the last full day of his presidency, Joe Biden commuted Peltier's life sentence to home confinement</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/petermatthiessen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>petermatthiessen</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/indigenous" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indigenous</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LeonardPeltier" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LeonardPeltier</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nativeamerican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nativeamerican</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/aim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>aim</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fbi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fbi</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nonfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nonfiction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/cia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/FreeSpeech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreeSpeech</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/censorship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>censorship</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History May 16, 1862: President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act. As a result, 84 million acres of public (i.e., Indigenous) lands were opened to settlers. Any citizen who had never taken up arms against the U.S. (i.e., northerners), including women and freed slaves, could file for a federal land grant. Consequently, great swaths of Native American land and natural resources were usurped by settlers. Additionally, much of the land was acquired by businesses, not individual citizens. For example, most of the rainforest west of Portland, Oregon was acquired by the Oregon Lumber Company through illegal claims under the act.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LandTheft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LandTheft</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/homestead" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>homestead</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/indigenous" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indigenous</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NativeAmerican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NativeAmerican</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lincoln" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lincoln</span></a></p>
