The Associated Press is still fighting its White House ban in the courts. Unfortunately, it's just one example in a long history. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2025/06/13/world/history-journalists-treated-badly/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #commentary #worldnews #associatedpress #ap #donaldtrump #joebiden #theodoreroosevelt #franklindroosevelt #censorship #newspapers #pressfreedom
I see a claim that #TheGuardian is going to bring in a paywall. ( https://mastodon.social/@RealJournalism/114636425734070332 )
I think this is a good thing. Journalists deserve to be paid for their work, and with little advertising money going to the newspapers/magazines/websites, those who read the articles are the right people to pay. I just wish it were easier to pay a little for a handful of articles, rather than setting up accounts everywhere.

In the early and mid-1950s Bill Bailey then Philip Mendoza drew the Paul Temple comic strip in the London Evening News. John McNamara picked up the pencil in 1956 and continued through to the series’ close in 1971.
A strip from January 1957
In the London Evening News, the Paul Temple comic strip ran from 11 December 1950 until 1 May 1971. According to the Buggles, “Video Killed the Radio Star”. In Paul Temple’s case, the television series killed the comic strip - the television series featured a rival newspaper, hence the axe.
Well, well, well... a few weeks before the Govt. increased the cap on foreign state ownership of UK newspapers to 15% (thereby allowing the UAE to take a 15% in the Telegraph), a delegation from the UAE visited No.1o to seek 'clarification' on media ownership laws....
Nothing to see here.... absolutely nothing!

So what do we think about the UK Govt, moving from an outright ban of foreign state investment in UK newspapers, to the proposed Labour policy of capping that investment at 15%?
The newspaper sector argues it will enhance their ability to gain much needed investment...
Or is it really just a trojan horse for further foreign interference in the UK's democracy? (newspaper have a disproportional impact on the content of the news cycle of other media).

Finished typing up all 274 newspaper references I found to a German accordion player, travelling around Scotland between 1852 and 1903, giving performances, and offering local tuning and repair services for accordions and related instruments. He was still travelling in the north of Scotland just a few months before he died in 1903. Next step: analyse the data and write it up as an academic journal paper. This may take some time! #Music #accordion #History #Scotland #newspapers #squeezebox

5 December 1950 London Evening News
Promoting their forthcoming Paul Temple comic strip, the London Evening News highlighted Steve, Paul Temple’s wife. Although her name was Louise, she was constantly referred to as Steve, a reference to her journalistic pen name, Steve Trent.

A2a .. online newspapers, for mid-1800s and later, are where I find some of the most obscure and interesting info. Great when I’m helping someone getting started in their research. Newspapers.com is pricey, but I use it almost daily. Some sites have local collections for free.
Congrats to all the Pulitzer Prize winners!! Special mention to Ann Telnaes who left the @washingtonpost and won the Pulitzer for editorial cartoons, and The Baltimore Banner as a small startup paper winning!

Update. "One of California’s largest collections of history could go dark."
https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/california-newspapers-collection-budget-cuts-20309491.php
"One of #California’s largest collections of digitized #newspapers, going back nearly 200 years and spanning approximately 54 million articles, could disappear due to gutted state #funding. The unexpected news has delivered a heavy blow to historians, journalists, researchers and educators who rely on the archives for their work…The California Digital Newspapers Collection, housed at UC Riverside’s Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research, said on its website that its future “is in jeopardy” after…its budget was completely decimated, leaving [it] with just a few weeks to source $300,000 or face the possibility of getting shut down."

In 2005, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) & the Library of Congress (LoC) launched the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), the program that supports Chronicling America.
Now LoC is excited to announce a new effort to reprocess some of the newspapers digitized in the early years of the program.
See an example of one small article at the blog post.
