#Trump Is Building a #GlobalGulag for #Immigrants Captured by #ICE

The U.S. is in talks with 19 nations, including #Libya, #Kosovo, #Rwanda, and #Moldova to accept deportees from other countries.

Nick Turse, Jonah Valdez
May 15 2025,

Excerpt: "In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the #GeorgeWBush administration created a worldwide network of secret prisons and torture sites as part of its global war on terror. Its crown jewel, the Guantánamo Bay detention center, was established in January 2002 as a place for the United States to hold so-called enemy combatants.

"The U.S. government chose the U.S. Naval Station Guantánamo Bay because it was seeking a site where neither U.S. nor international law applied — a legal black hole where they could disappear people indefinitely. Over time, Guantánamo became emblematic of gross human rights abuses. “Forever prisoners” of the war on terror are still being held there today. Others caught up in America’s counterterrorism dragnet were detained at torture prisons in Afghanistan and Iraq or kidnapped and 'rendered' to CIA black sites — secret prisons in at least eight countries around the world.

"As the Trump administration has expanded the Bush and #Obama-era terrorism paradigm to cast immigrants and refugees as terrorists and gang members, it has reconceptualized rendition and even pressed Guantánamo Bay into service as a way station for Venezuelan men expelled to El Salvador."

[Not from the NYT article, still my #DavidSouter 🧵]

#Souter planned his retirement from #SCOTUS to occur during a Democratic presidency as he was keenly aware of Republican designs on turning the court into a political arm.

NPR 2009:
Factors in his decision no doubt include the election of President #Obama, who would be more likely to appoint a successor attuned to the principles Souter has followed as a moderate-to-liberal member of the court's more liberal bloc over the past 2 decades.

“It’s like heaven,” she said in a video published by the #Obama White House when she was nominated to be #librarian of #Congress. In the video, she reflected on her status as the first #woman & first #Black librarian of Congress, saying that her selection showed “what a national #library can be.”

“It’s inclusive,”she said. “It can be part of everyone’s story. I believe in what libraries can be for a civilized society, & a country that is open to all.”

Dr. Hayden became the #librarian of #Congress after a lengthy run as the chief librarian in #Baltimore, her longtime home, where she had overhauled the city’s struggling public #library system.

She had known #Obama since her early days as a librarian working in the #Chicago #PublicLibrary. She started as a librarian in Chicago in 1973 & ultimately became the city’s chief librarian.

But she harbored a special appreciation for the #LibraryOfCongress, which she called a “treasure chest.”

The #Trump admin fired the #librarian of #Congress, Dr. Carla D. Hayden, on Thurs, drawing swift outcry from #Democrats. Hayden was the 1st #AfricanAmerican & 1st #woman to serve as the head of the institution.

Hayden, appointed as the 14th librarian of Congress by Pres Barack #Obama in 2016, had overseen the library through Trump’s first term. The #LibraryOfCongress, the oldest govt-run cultural institution in the #UnitedStates, only rarely gets a new leader. Hayden was its 1st since 1987.

Jill Lawrence (@jilldlawrence) is very good on how US #data policy declined from #Obama ("Making Open and Machine Readable the New Default") to #Trump. "Huge collections of scientific and statistical data are already gone, while enormous caches of personal data —your finances, health, income, and more— are in the hands of unknown, inexperienced people who have no business getting access to it, based on either laws or common sense."

#Trump is all over the place as usual. He has insulted #Biden, went on a long tangent about #Obama’s presidential library in Chicago, brought up California Governor #GavinNewsom repeatedly calling him “Newscum” — something he loves to do.

Trump refused to say how he knew the #Houthis were backing down. “They’ve said, ‘Please don’t bomb us anymore,’” then added that it didn’t “matter” where he heard the information but that it came from a “very good source.”

@dworkin

AOC and her friends created this clusterfvck. AOC btw also supported Nina Turners' run for Congress (Turner called the Biden and Trump "two bowls of shit").

I respect your efforts Scott but you're inviting another 2016 for 2028 by letting yourself get brainwashed by #berniebros and their racist agenda to make #Obama a footnote of history by replacing and rebranding ACA w/Public Option.

#Kayleigh: Yeah. A.P. Fact check here's the claim. #Trump ran up the debt by more than any president in history… That's incorrect. But the total debt rose more under former president #Obama with Trump in second place.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: That’s incorrect. The debt incurred during the Trump era was very high. But in terms of raw dollars, the total debt rose more under former President Barack Obama, with Trump in second place though Obama held office for two terms, while Trump served one.

Obama making perfect sense as always. Sure do miss this guy. What a smart, reasoned leader who got things done. #Obama / jacked and edited from Meidas touch.

Just back in 2021 neoliberals were BEGGING Biden to stop officially approving of the Suadi's using starvation as a weapon of war in Yemen and he couldn't even do that.

So yea at this point, nah the US is a terrorist state and our tax dollars killed 68 Africans, just to stymie the Yemen economy.

Obama, Biden, Trump? When it comes to Yemen, they are all the same.

The US interest in Yemen has always involved a commitment to harm civilians.

This weeks incident is sadly typical US war story.

Biden back in 2020 originally said he'd end the war in Yemen, but instead he plunged us deeper into the conflict because the Houthi's opposed the genocide in Palestine.

Oh look, a 2021 Brookings article hoping for a Biden ceasefire that never came . . .
