800 lines of :nixos: #nix later and I have successfully beefed up our #3dPrinting infrastructure at work @umphy with one #RaspberryPi 4:

· a gethomepage.dev landing page
· three fullHD webcams, one for each printer, with current filament visible
· a smart #Tasmota multiplug to remotely power off a printer in case of a problem/hangup
· 🐙 #OctoPrint for the Prusa MK3S, #PrusaLink by the #PrusaMINIs
· 🔐 all password-protected and certs from #LetsEncrypt

I bought a printer from BambuLab because the hardware looked good and I had an urgent need. There's no way I could finish my Voron build in time to take care of a big order.

I did so with huge reservations about their relationship to the open source history of 3D printing, including the lack of integration with #octoprint and #spoolman, and now my fears are being realized.

If they don't reverse course soon, I'm going to budget for a Prusa and there's going to be a used printer up for sale as soon as I can replace it.

Walled gardens are not my thing.

After installing #OctoPrint with 5 lines of config on my #NixOS server, i was greeted with a very nice guided setup wizard. I like those little details and i really appreciate that.
If my overall experience continues this way, i am happy that this tool exists.

I haven't played with my 3D printer for ages (since getting a laser cutter 🤔) but I remember that discovering OctoPrint was a game changer for me.

I guess it depends on what functionality is standard on "beginner" printers these days, but it might be worth having a look at what #OctoPrint offers.

Most 3D printers out there run free #OpenSource software like #Marlin, #Octoprint, #Klipper, #Moonraker, #Mainsail, #Fluidd, #Kiauh, etc.

The fact that you paid for your 3D printer doesn't mean that any of that money reached the developers giving their time to create and maintain the software it runs.

The rule of thumb is that if you use free open-source software, please consider sponsoring the developers and maintainers of said software.

Thank you! 🙂

My #OctoPrint @octoprint stopped working properly after an upgrade of some packages. But due to the very good backup & restore functionality I just created a brand new SD Card with the latest release and restored from backup and everything work smoothly again. Very good work @foosel 👏

The reason why I am using the #ESP32 and #MQTT is because I am developing an #opensource plugin for #Octoprint.

This plugin will allow for simple inputs, 6 variables that would allow anyone to connect #IOT sensors to their #Octoprint, without the need of DIY electronics.

Users will be able to use #Sonoff and #Tasmota sensors as inputs that they can just buy and put in their enclosures. Thus, they won't need to do any electrical or programming work.
