Devin Prater :blind:<p>So, I've been thinking about Android. How accessibility seemingly works best on Pixels, and everything else is just, like, spinning the wheel and hoping it lands somewhere on the "this works really well" side and not the "I'll have to send this back" side. I'd say my OnePlus is in the middle of that. It's maddening sometimes, but I can still use it. I've used it for 6 months, besides last week when I was on iOS.<br>The image descriptions are what made me come back, that and emulation, and Google Messages for Web, Podcast Addict. I was reading a Kindle book, and came across an image. On iOS, I would have had to open the Image Describer shortcut, hit done on the text field because I don't have any questions about the image, wait 30 seconds, then read the description. on Android, it's just a single command, and in about 5 seconds, I have a description that I can then ask questions about.</p><p>I think Android is worth trying, if you're blind and don't mind AI, just for that. And, thankfully, I'm not missing too much. Braille Access on iOS though is a big one. Taking notes is important because my half a brain cell can't store everything, so being able to just type out a note in Braille is really nice. Granted, I don't care if a note is in Braille, or is in print translated to Braille while I type and read, but I have to be able to get to a new note quickly. So I'll try out some apps there and see if I can get a good, quick experience.</p><p>Oh hey I wonder if there's a way I can tell the version of the accessibility frameworks onePlus uses? <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>android</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/google" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>google</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/onePlus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>onePlus</span></a></p>
Devin Prater :blind:<p>Please boost for reach, for any OnePlus users or staff:</p><p>I wrote a review of my OnePlus 13 on OnePlus' community site. If you're a member there, please like it to show support for the accessibility issues I brought up. I'd really like to get these fixed, since this is a powerful phone that's got Google's TalkBack, not Samsung's moldy fork, and is great overall, besides the accessibility issues. I'd love to be able to recommend this phone as an all-around great phone for blind people.</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@accessibleandroid" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>accessibleandroid</span></a></span></p><p><a href="https://community.oneplus.com/thread/1914723571234504708" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">community.oneplus.com/thread/1</span><span class="invisible">914723571234504708</span></a> [A review of the OnePlus 13, from a blind person's perspective]</p><p><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>android</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/OnePlus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OnePlus</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/OnePlus13" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OnePlus13</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blind</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Braille" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Braille</span></a></p>
Devin Prater :blind:<p>Ugh you guys! The more I compare iOS with Android, particularly with Braille, the more I wish Android was like iOS. For example, the notification center. On my Android phone, TalkBack focus doesn't land on the time, or the first notification, but on the QR scanner.</p><p>When you open the Braille keyboard in Braille Display mode for the first time, sometimes you find that you can't type into the edit field because somehow the Braille Display message covers the text field, or something. So you have to switch keyboards a few times and hope it works the first time, or the second time.</p><p>And the most annoying thing, if you open All Apps and search for an app in OnePlus' SystemUI, and press Enter on an app to open it, well nothing happens.</p><p>I know I can use NovaLauncher, but that would require me moving my apps into place again, and the other two are pretty annoying. Android, as of now, just is not made for Braille users yet. It presupposes that a TalkBack user can touch any part of the screen instead of having to swipe and swipe and swipe. And as usual, a lot of people on the Blind Android Users group, and thus a lot on the talkback Trusted Testers team, are all like "well then explore by touch instead of swiping." But at least TalkBack supports Braille at all now, especially for HID Braille displays. I just have to be patient. But it's hard when something else already does it better. in many cases.</p><p><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Braille" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Braille</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blind</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>android</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/OnePlus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OnePlus</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Google" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Google</span></a> TalkBack <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/google" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>google</span></a></p>

Devin Prater :blind:<p>Since the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 can do dual connections, I connected them to the iPhone. Latency is fairly good, and I was able to set up Golden Audio, which is basically audio customized for my hearing through an ear canal audio scan and hearing test. VoiceOver's Screen Recognition, and double tap and hold on a **single item** really helped with that. Also Spatial Audio, with head tracking, works with VoiceOver. slightly interesting. Anyway, really great earbuds for $200 or so.</p><p><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blind</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/onePlus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>onePlus</span></a></p>

Devin Prater :blind:<p>So there was an update for the OnePlus 13 today, and I can now use game controllers to play games while TalkBack is still turned on! I suspect this is to really help sighted users who use button mappers and other accessibility services, but I ain't complaining! The fingerprint announcements are still broken, always saying "move up" no matter where my finger is, but I've pretty much gotten the location of the fingerprint scanner into muscle memory, so I'm not too terribly bothered by that anymore. Release notes also talk about improvements to the back camera, and the update size was about a gig or so.</p><p><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/OnePlus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OnePlus</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Android</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://androiddev.social/@MishaalRahman" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>MishaalRahman</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/Android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Android</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/OnePlus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OnePlus</span></a> <a href="https://tweesecake.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a></p>
