It was an in-person only part of the program but thankfully she recorded it ahead of time too and posted it for everyone. I had been told it was a must-hear and everyone was right. Most of it wasn't new to me, as deeply interested in social justice as I am, but it did explicitly name neoliberalism and capitalist imperialist systems and tie them in to our education issues in new ways for me. <a href="https://robinderosa.net/higher-ed/against-hope-opened24/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">robinderosa.net/higher-ed/agai</span><span class="invisible">nst-hope-opened24/</span></a></p>
Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>After the mid-morning break at <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a>, I am now attending "Open Education at a Crossroads" from the fabulous Catherine Cronin and Laura Czerniewicz! "The purpose of the session is to enable globally diverse conversations about the future of open education."</p>
Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>If you are at the final day of the Open Education Conference, please reply to this post or make your own post tagged <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a> and--at some point today-- ask someone if they're interested in joining Mastodon or BlueSky. Let's bring our people into spaces where we can talk *after* the conference, too!</p>
Robin DeRosa<p>I gave a presentation at OpenEd24 in Providence, RI today. It was called "Against Hope." You can access the slide deck and a practice recording of the talk on my website here: <a href="https://robinderosa.net/higher-ed/against-hope-opened24/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">robinderosa.net/higher-ed/agai</span><span class="invisible">nst-hope-opened24/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.coop/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/hope" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hope</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/OER" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OER</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/HigherEd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HigherEd</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/neoliberalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neoliberalism</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/GretaThunberg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GretaThunberg</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/climateChange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>climateChange</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/austerity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>austerity</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/publicEducation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>publicEducation</span></a> <a href="https://social.coop/tags/fascism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fascism</span></a></p>

Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>If anyone else, like me, was Deeply disappointed in the Day 2 keynote at <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a>, please check out this amazing refutation of all that crap from Robin DeRosa <span class="h-card"><a href="https://social.coop/@actualham" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>actualham</span></a></span> : <a href="https://bit.ly/AGAINSTHOPE" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">bit.ly/AGAINSTHOPE</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>I don't think we have enough people on Mastodon to stage a walkout at the <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a> keynote but we could if enough of us just get up and leave?</p>
Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>Now at <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a>, *one of* the most out of touch discussions about AI I could expect here, though not the worst! From a keynote, it is disappointing. Given the climate disasters we are seeing week by week, how can anyone preach Generative AI as some savior for equity on a global scale?</p>
Robin DeRosa<p>The old band getting back together at <a href="https://social.coop/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a>. Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>As the keynote speakers underscore: "We don't want to replace expensive, static patriarchal textbooks with *free* static and patriarchal textbooks" <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a></p>
Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>But there is more to us than cost savings! Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>As James shares, "Our goal is to reflect your words and your work back to you as our community, in the spirit of remixing and reusing... very liberally." <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a></p>
Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>The theme of <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a> is "It's about time" when asked, "for what?" results from the Mentimeter include "joy, change, equity, sustainability, accessibility, funding, justice," and of course... "Open education!"</p>
Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>And now, onto the welcome from the Board Members leading the <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a> conference!</p>
Abbey Elder :OpenAccess:<p>"No matter where you live, there are people indigenous to that place." "The number one thing you can do is try to educate yourself and learn about those communities... hear from them, make sure they're included and that they can have their voices heard as well." <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenEd24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenEd24</span></a></p>

Less excited to be attending amidst a hurricane. Two hurricanes in 3 weeks is a bit much. Yay climate change.</p>
