Open Research Office Berlin

Ihr habt es sicher mitbekommen: Seit 2025 heißen wir Open Research Office Berlin (OROB). Und nicht mehr Open-Access-Büro Berlin (OABB).

Die Umbenennung geht auf die Berliner #Landesinitiative #OpenResearch zurück, die bereits in der #OpenAccess-Strategie des Landes Berlin angelegt war und die wir weiter verfolgen, etwa in der Verbindung aus #Wissenschaft und #Kulturerbe.

While national initiatives, such as the French Open Science Monitor, aim to track this evolution using open data, reliance on proprietary databases persists in many places. Open platforms like OpenAlex still require significant human intervention for data accuracy. This paper introduces Works-magnet, a project by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR) Data Science & Engineering Team. Works-magnet is designed to accelerate the curation of bibliographic and research data metadata, particularly affiliations, by making automated AI calculations visible and correctable. It addresses challenges related to metadata heterogeneity, complex processing chains, and the need for human curation in a diverse research landscape. The paper details Works-magnet's concepts, and the observed limitations, while outlining future directions for enhancing open metadata quality and reusability. Rethinking Libraries in the 21st CenturyDespite substantial investments in digitization, library-curated datasets remain conspicuously underrepresented in the landscape of research infrastructures and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). This keynote will trace the conceptual inertia, rooted in centuries-old notions of the book as a physical object and the library as a temple of knowledge, as one possible way of understanding the persistent disconnect between the resource-rich platforms libraries produce and the evolving methodologies that define today’s digital humanities. By identifying the conceptual and operational barriers that hinder alignment, the talk will explore how we could reimagine library practices, expand digital services, and ultimately forge stronger collaborations with scholars. Can we shed the atavistic baggage of print culture and embrace the library’s potential as a dynamic, data-driven engine for 21st-century research?
