#DataCenters’ Hunger for #Energy Could Raise All #Electric Bills
Individuals and small businesses may end up bearing some of the cost of grid upgrades needed for large #electricity users, a new report found. That’s because the cost of the #powerplants, transmission lines and other equipment that utilities need to serve data centers, factories and other large users of electricity is likely to be spread to everybody who uses electricity.

Data centers account for much of the increase in demand for electricity.

#Spain's #blackout report: #Powerplants meant to stabilize voltage didn’t
Report concludes several steps meant to address small instability made matters worse, eventually leading to a self-reinforcing cascade where high voltages caused power plants to drop off grid, thereby increasing voltage further. Critically, report suggests that Spanish grid operator had an unusually low number of plants on call to stabilize matters, and some of the ones it did have responded poorly. arstechnica.com/science/2025/0

What #solar? What #wind? #Texas #datacenters build their own #gas #powerplants
On the old ranch across the street, developers want to build an complex of supercomputers for AI, plus a large, private power plant to run it.
The plant would be big enough to power a major city, with 1,200MW of planned generation capacity fueled by West Texas shale gas. It will only supply the new #datacenter, and possibly other large data centers recently proposed, down the road.

Documents Show #EPA Wants to Erase #GreenhouseGas Limits on #PowerPlants
Agency argues #carbon #emissions from power plants do not contribute “significantly” to #climatechange. Eliminating those emissions would have no meaningful effect on public health and welfare, agency said.
Scientists overwhelmingly concluded that #carbondioxide, #methane and other greenhouse gases from the burning of #oil, #gas and #coal are dangerously heating the planet.

#Air #pollution still plagues nearly half of #Americans. That does a number on our #health
Report comes as Trump admin is rolling back some key air quality regulations. Air quality across country has improved dramatically since regulations like #CleanAirAct in 1970s to govern sources of pollution like #coal-fired #powerplants and #emissions from #diesel trucks. In 2023, nearly half of #US -- 156 million -- lived in places heavy in smog or soot pollution that harms health.

Trump’s #EPA Plans to Stop Collecting #GreenhouseGas #Emissions Data From Most #Polluters
#Climate experts expressed shock and dismay. “It would be a bit like unplugging the equipment that monitors the vital signs of a patient that is critically ill,” one said.
The move would affect thousands of industrial facilities across the country, including #oil refineries, #powerplants and #coal #mines as well as those that make #petrochemicals, cement, glass, iron and steel.

Trump Said, ‘We Have More Coal Than Anybody.’ See Where We Burn It.
There are 206 #coal-burning #powerplants left in the #UnitedStates, which supply about 16% of the country’s energy. Experts say burning more doesn’t make financial sense.
After declaring a national energy emergency on his first day in office, President Trump said Thursday that "good, clean coal” could be a fuel source for new #electric generating plants.

Has Trump changed retirement plans for the country’s largest #coal #powerplants?
A growth in #electricity demand is leading to talk of delayed closures.
A few extra years of a coal plant is more stopgap than a long-term solution. When it comes to building new plants developers are talking about #naturalgas, #solar, #nuclear, but have yet to see a substantial discussion of building new coal.

Startup is getting closer to bringing next-generation #nuclear to grid
#KairosPower signed a big deal with a tech giant and got approval to build its next test facility.
While construction on test reactors is rolling, Kairos is forging ahead with commercial deals—in Oct, it announced agreement with #Google to build up to 500MW’ worth of #powerplants by 2035. Under this agreement, Kairos will develop, construct, and operate plants and sell #electricity to the tech giant.
