I made a few changes to my website – added new images, adjusted some text, changed the header, etc.
It's a work in progress. I'm not very techy and am open to feedback if anything doesn't work or looks off to you:
Update. #SpringerNature has now retracted this book.
https://retractionwatch.com/2025/07/16/springer-nature-to-retract-machine-learning-book-following-retraction-watch-coverage/
Thanks to @retractionwatch for exposing it.
I want to #work with [you] people in the #Fediverse !
Translating your articles, #proofreading your #writing, doing #research for your video essay on a 20th century philosophical school, teach you one or two #languages, doing admin for your educational non-profit, exchanging broader knowledge around politics, humanities, literature, helping sell you woodcarving art pieces...
but above all I want to make #art and creative things with you.
I run out of options and ressources to find "normal" work IRL where I live, or escaping to study in Europe,
and it is in part because I had already started being too influenced by people on here to be able to continue accepting the dire conditions offered in my immediate environment,
but also, I joined here because I did not really belong in said environment already.
so the thing is, I can only do the things listed remotely, online, for now.
Anyone interested?

"Springer Nature book on machine learning is full of made-up citations."

PS: Will this kind of slipshod practice decline on its own? Or does it require public shaming? I don't know. But I'm grateful to @retractionwatch for turning on its spotlight.
Looking for a human translator to convey your human words to a human audience? Maybe that's me!
I translate from Swedish, French, Norwegian and Danish into English (mainly UK but US possible depending on the text - I also work with a USian translator as a team where required). I'm a full Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting for both Swedish and French.
I'm also an Intermediate Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading – in other words, I offer proofreading/editing/copyediting services too.
Oh, and copywriting!
I work on everything from press releases through sustainability reports to novels. Particularly fond of archaeology/history (got to get use from my MA somehow) and personal development, but really I'm interested in almost everything and translation allows me to be a nerd about all kinds of things.
The subjects I *don't* do are legal, financial and medical.

I feel like this needs a pic, so here are two of my three cats looking comfy (if a bit warm).
Spent the entire day post-proofing my wife's new book. No shade on the original proof-reader! We all see different things, and some of the things I've seen are due to me knowing the story in advance, so I can suggest changes that are clarity-enhancing for readers, knowing what they were expected to get out of a passage.
Anyway, job done now until the beginning of next month when I need to format it into the ePub and paperback layouts.

Here's a strange one:
After a friendly exchange with a former client (I'm a freelance copy-editor and proofreader), I visited their website and found that they now also copy-edit and proofread and are *using my writing, from my website, as their own, on their website*.
Entire sentences and paragraphs are identical. It's been like this for years. And this from someone I helped earn a doctorate.
What to do?
Interesting case of false attraction in this BBC Sport article, where reversing the syntax of "certain doors swing open" puts the verb beside singular "that" and draws the error (which has since been corrected).
I wrote about this problem here: https://stancarey.wordpress.com/2015/05/22/grammatical-disagreement-through-false-attraction/
Is there a tariff on #proofreading?

It's so exciting when I get to unwaprd a package I've been waiting for!
Proofreading: it matters!
Things you forget about in the excitement of adding 60% to the regular pagination of your magazine:
1. That's 60% more proofing in layout!
2. It'll be a much longer day on press in May.
But it's looking fabulous — even if I do say so myself — helped in no small part by the complete absence of advertising. That's thanks to BLAG members
PS. Pre-orders for this special issue of BLAG close this coming Monday: https://bl.ag/07.
Plain weaves and twill weaves are accepted, though.

This morning I'm sharing a brief thread on my freelance gigs, because social media sharing is good for the discoverability of these gigs and for the search algorithm within Fiverr, for better or for worse. (I'm not here to argue these points; please skip, if uninterested.)
First up, though it may require login, is my profile: https://www.fiverr.com/s/lj01yy7
Next is my fiction proofreading and editing gig. Those of you who have had me beta read know how careful and supportive I am as an editor and proofreader.

Testimonials on my website from people whose writing I've copy-edited or proofread: https://stancarey.com/testimonials/
If this is something you're interested in getting done, I'd love to hear from you.
So, AI's now the #superhero of #academia, spotting all the errors researchers missed while pretending to be smart . Meanwhile, humans everywhere breathe a sigh of #relief as they realize their PhDs are *finally* getting the #automated #proofreading they so desperately needed
. Now if only #AI could also write the papers for them...
