Proton is leaving because Proton cannot control the flow of information here on the Fediverse.

Most corporations mimic social algorithms to their advantage, particularly, to suppress news and information that may not paint them in a good light. Proton cannot do that on the Fediverse.

When Proton rebranded a few years ago, which caused some people to lose their accounts with no refund, they silenced any complaints on both Facebook and Reddit. I know, because I was one of those people. Most of you were happy to have the new upgraded accounts, but if you had the original family plan, which they discontinued (only to start selling a new family plan months later), you were not a happy person to find out you lost your service.

Additionally, it has been brought to people's attention that Proton now falls under Us-jurisdiction. Proton would like to argue that is only for Proton Wallet, but our legal system does not allow a company to pick and choose. Plus, even if they could (you cannot), it means they could still be pressured and influence by US Politics and US Laws now. This was another little fact, Proton wanted to suppress, but cannot because the Fediverse is organic, and not centralized.

I keep getting asked this (repeatedly).

" What about Proton VPN? I think they are in Europe."

A division of Proton is now a US-based company. Particularly, Proton Wallet. Their Terms of Services, also goes into lengths concerning Us Laws and Us Customers. It goes beyond just the CEO's support for fascism leadership (Donald Trump).

Naturally, making this list is not easy. These are two types of companies I avoided in making my list.

1) Those who actually fall under US-jurisdiction because they are based or owned by a company in the USA.

More than often, I will stumble over a company that appears to be outside the USA, but later find they are owned by another corporation based inside the USA, and so they do fall under US-jurisdiction.

2) Those who voluntarily give up their sovereignty to the United States. The 2nd type, who voluntarily gives up their sovereignty in the way of US jurisdiction, have whole sections of their terms concerning US Laws and US based customers. If a fascist government says jump, these people will ask, how high?!

The current #Proton outage is even locking me out of my #ProtonPass. This is bad. One thing is not being able to check emails or to access cloud storage, another is not being able to access one’s own passwords!!!

I am seriously thinking about moving back to #KeePassXC, that served me so well for so many years (not just because of this particular event, but because it is a community-maintained, local-first software, much less prone to this kind of troubles)!

This is unacceptable, @protonprivacy.

Somebody knows a good alternative for Proton drive? I want to put 200 gigabytes photos and movies in the cloud.

I tried already Disroot but that doesn’t work fine. It’s to difficult for me. I want an easy cloud system. Like proton drive but then without a CEO that becomes friends with Trump.

@protonprivacy

Well, that explanation was disapointing. First, he deny and apology for nothing. And he miss the point of how much important that post was harmful from the privacy and security perspective.

The fact that he didn't see the importance and the link seems to tell us that he's not in sync with Proton mission anymore.

Does anybody know of a browser besides Chrome and Firefox that works on an old Mac (OSX 10.10.5)?

I use Firefox, but ProtonDrive (but not ProtonMail) has started giving me a login error. Proton Support recommends trying another browser, but the only one from their list that I could install is Pale Moon, which “has not been tested extensively”: I can log in but not work with files. (Other browsers on the list are Brave, Tor, Safari, Edge, Opera, and IceCat.)

Can anyone help me?

I want to have multiple copies of my photo archive. I have a #Mac & want to keep the local photos synced with an external hard drive plus a cloud backup.

I don't want Apple Photos because I want photos stored as jpgs in a normal file structure.

I thought #ProtonDrive would be the answer. But it seems there's no easy way to ensure that every photo is always synced so it is stored locally and in the cloud automatically.

Any suggestions?

Just had an email from @protonprivacy about a new drive plan (Drive Lite) - 20GB for £1.09 per month.

I was looking at setting this up on a handful of phones with different accounts (for my family) but it seems to only accept Google Play subscriptions

I was wondering if there is a way to pay directly without needing a google account?
