For US folks... You know the experience of being on a road trip and, no matter where you are, turning the dial to find the public radio station? It's the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that makes that possible.

Right now, the Trump administration is trying to stop future CPB funding AND also rescind funding that was previously approved. This would likely end public radio and tv as we know them. Please send a message to Congress!

#NPR manages & operates the terrestrial distribution system allowing member stations & community broadcasters to deliver & download content for broadcast. Additionally, the network & its member stations rely on #CPB to help acquire rights to broadcast #music for use on its shows.

The #ExecutiveOrder is just one front in the #Trump admin's attack on #PublicMedia—& itself a part of a larger assault on the #news media writ large.

Ricardo Sandoval-Palos, public editor of PBS, joined @SFPublicPress executive director Lila LaHood at a recent fireside chat to discuss the future of media. The conversation took place before President Trump had announced an executive order attempting to defund public media, but Sandoval-Palos was anticipating the move. “The threat is at the local station level. The bulk of rural stations around the country, and even some urban stations probably cannot stay open if they don’t have the support from the [Corporation for Public Broadcasting] CPB. Some stations, up to 60% of their budgets are made up by funds from CPB,” he said.

"The neo–Cold War trick is to just say "Putin" enough times in hopes that the reader will eventually realize that the US government funding anything is a sign of impending tyranny."
Once again, hats off to @FAIR for defending #PublicMedia (compromised as it is) from folks who want to conflate @NPR with "State Media"

Public media isn’t outdated or unnecessary. It’s filling the void left by collapsing local for-profit newsrooms.

In WA state, nearly 1 in 3 journalists now works in public media. Killing funding means killing local journalism, according to a media researcher.

#Trump, who has long accused #PBS & #NPR of *biased* [lie-free] coverage, signed an #ExecutiveOrder late Thurs seeking to end federal #funding for the 2 broadcasters. The immediate impact of the order was unclear. NPR & PBS get a small portion of their funds from #Congress through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, an #independent organization that funds #PublicMedia.

Like many, I grew up watching shows like Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, Reading Rainbow and NOVA on #PBS. A couple of years ago, I had the honor of the local PBS station coming to my home studio to film a feature for a program called ArtsPlus through which I've been able to share my love for #pottery and the natural environment with a national audience. Non-commercial and educational, PBS is definitely worth fighting for.
