Ok fedifam,
I guess I need to do this as a #publicservice.

Yesterday I applied up for #SocialSecurity online.

Apart from needing the information about past 2 years wages and dates and names of marriages and divorces, the process was surprisingly smooth.

I received an email that someone at the Winston-Salem branch would be reviewing my application and contact me with questions. Within 30 days I should have a determination. My start date is August 9th.

I'll post updates as they come.

#ProPublica won the prestigious #Pulitzer Prize for #PublicService for series “Life of the Mother,”which judges described as “urgent reporting about #pregnant #women who #died after doctors delayed urgently needed #care for fear of violating vague ‘life of the mother’ exceptions in states w/strict #abortion #laws.” The prize is given to staff of a news org that performed “meritorious public service.” This is the 2nd consecutive year ProPublica was awarded the distinction…

While #Trump is illegally ignoring Supreme Court decisions in order to advance his #fascist agenda, #PierrePoilievre, as Prime Minister, would seek to use, for the first time ever by the federal government, the Canadian Constitution's #NotwithstandingClause in order to end what he calls "#WokeCulture" in the #PublicService and in the #military.

But he denies being a "mini-Trump"

🧢 Just had a pleasant conversation with @bzg about many topics but especially the global #BlueHats initiative.

🗣️ If you are (or know) a civil servant who is interested in supporting and using #OpenSource in your work, follow @bluehats and get in touch with either of us for brainstorming about how you can join us and be an advocate.

The meeting was a potential turning point after the frenetic first weeks of #Trump’s 2nd term. It yielded the first significant indication that Trump is willing to put some limits on #Musk, whose efforts have become the subject of several lawsuits & prompted concerns from #Republican lawmakers, some of whom have complained directly to Trump.

Something I’m glad to have completed this week: a scramble to put together a draft of a from-the-ground-up brand spanking new procedure manual for my whole department.

When it’s completely finished it’s going to be an enormous binder with lots of sections and fiddly bits and include everything needed to completely grok everything everyone does every day. Because cross training means they have to know and be able to do it ALL.

This comment really resonates with me: "so many of them [the people recently fired] took these lower paying jobs, because they wanted to do work they felt actually helped people. You don't often think of government work and passion as things that go together, but there really are people out there that care."

People as an essential part of infrastructure - which in this case happens to be infrastructure provided by government; infrastructure - which includes the people delivering it - as a service.

www.linkedin.comShaun Southworth on LinkedIn: #federalemployees #govjobs #elonmusk #opm #federalworker #knowyourrights…🚨 Federal Employees: How to Respond to the OPM Email 🚨 If you’re a federal employee, you’ve likely received the unusual OPM email asking you to justify your job in five bullet points. And you’ve probably seen Elon Musk’s claim that failure to respond will be treated as a resignation. 🔹 Let’s be clear: That’s legally baseless. 🔹 The email itself does NOT say that. 🔹 And for career federal employees, failure to respond cannot lawfully be treated as a resignation. But ignoring the email outright could be risky. Agencies could mischaracterize your non-response as insubordination or failure to follow instructions. ✅ What You Should Do to Protect Yourself 📌 Forward the email to your supervisor and ask for guidance. Here’s a template: Subject: Request for Guidance on OPM Email Dear [Supervisor’s Name], I received the attached email from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) asking me to provide a list of my work accomplishments from last week. The email did not originate from my agency or my chain of command, and I want to ensure I respond appropriately in compliance with agency expectations. Please advise by [end of my tour of duty on Monday] whether I am required to respond and, if so, what type of information I should include in my response. Unless I receive instruction from my agency or chain of command, I will assume there is no obligation to reply to this request. Best regards, [Your Name] [Your Position] [Your Agency] 📌 If required to respond, focus on five strong bullet points based on your performance plan, emphasizing measurable impact. 📌 Remember: This is an intimidation tactic. But you have strong civil service protections. If you face retaliation, threats, or wrongful termination, consult your union or a federal employment attorney immediately. I’ll continue monitoring this and will post updates as needed. Stay informed, stay professional, and don’t fall into any legal traps. 💬 Federal employees: What questions do you have? Please help get the word out to our #PublicService friends who were working in the #FederalGovernment:
Some friends and I created this site to track the impacts of the #Trump Admin's attack on the federal service.
