How can you leave Ollantaytambo without purchasing a chullo from one of the vendors? Ollantaytambo, Peru 2017

"A chullo (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈtʃuʎo], from Quechua: ch'ullu; known as lluch'u in Aymara) is an Andean style of hat with earflaps, made from vicuña, alpaca, llama or sheep's wool. Alpaca fleece has wool-like qualities that help to insulate chullo-wearers from the harsh conditions in the Andean mountain region. Chullos often have ear-flaps that can be tied under the chin, to further warm the wearer's head.

Hats have been worn in the Andean mountain region by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Wearing different types and colors has a significance among certain Andean natives. According to Peruvian historian Arturo Jiménez Borja, the chullo has its origins in the cultural exchange between Spaniards, who incorporated elements of their birretes and the original hat of the Andeans.

Compare the so-called "sherpa hat" associated with the Himalayas." --- Wikipedia

Today's Inti Raymi, the Inkan New Year! It was founded by the ruler Pachakuteq, on 1438 following the war with the Chanka Confederation who almost defeated the Inkas. Inti Raymi is a celebration on the Winter solstice to the Sun god, Inti. It was revived by Faustino Espinoza Navarro on June 24, 1944. Not only did he act & write the script in #quechua, he later co-founded the High Academy of the Quechua Language (AMLQ). It was later recgonized as an official holiday in 1977. #indigenous #history

But, of course, the #Quechua are far from the only people to attach significance to the winter solstice. Germanic peoples had #Jule; just as Inti Raymi traditions transferred to St. John's Eve, so too most of Jule was attached to #Christmas when the early Germanic peoples converted to Christianity.

The Romans had #Saturnalia, but that fell a few days before the solstice. There was also #SolInvictus, but that was mostly a #pagan attempt to coöpt Christmas.

Incan-Andean and Aztec philosophers alike believe in balance between extremes. In Quechua it is called yanantin. In Nahuatl, it's ometecuhtli-omecihuatl. And, both teach that ethics creates philosophy, not the reverse. Andean philosopher Hugo Chacón writes

“Being is explained as associative renewal, one works their individuality and independence from the profundity of human associations… Andean being is unintelligible without gatherings”.

United Nations Failed #Indigenous in #Peru: #CopperMining and Electric Vehicles Mean Death

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, October 24, 2023

"Indigenous mothers from the Amazon in Peru told the United Nations that they were being shot by the army from helicopters, their children were being murdered, and they were being stalked home from protests to defend their land from mining.

"The United Nations failed them, refused to make them a priority, reduced their pleas to a series of numbers in their report, and failed to tell the world that the United States government sent its military in June to bolster the illegal regime that was killing them.

"An Indigenous from Peru told the United Nations Human Rights Committee in October that the people were disappointed that the murder of their leaders was not included in the United Nations report."

@futurebird This might be cliché, but #pyramids. Start with the ones in #Egypt. Talk about how the second-oldest civilisation managed to build such impressive structures with bronze tools.

Then show them the ones in #Mexico. Point out the clever perspective trick to make the sides of the staircases appear parallel from the ground.

Maybe also throw in the #NazcaLines, and be sure to mention that the #Quechua didn't even have writing at the time.

You should know this Indigenous trans woman:

Gahela Cari is a trans Afro-Andean woman from #quechua parents. She's the most visisble trans leader in #peru, appearing prominently against Manuel Merino’s failed legislative takeover in 2020. She’s also a leader of the party Nuevo Peru and attempted a campaign as the 1st #Native trans woman for congress. Her proposals were to expand trans & cis women’s rights and local agriculture. And, she continues her work today

One of Indigenous Peru's greatest books was just translated into Quechua!

José Carlos Mariátegui's Indigenist masterpiece "Seven Interpetive Essays on Peruvian Reality" (1928) has just translated into #quechua after 96 years since publication. Mariátegui's book has been a guidebook for #indigenous peoples in Peru and #latinamerica since the 1920s. This is amazing news for #nativeamerican peoples across the continent.

I just discovered Lenin Tamayo, a #Peruvian singer who blends #KPop with #Andean music & the #Quechua language!

His Amaru album will have three tracks, each with four previously unreleased songs. Each track will be anchored in Inca mythology: Kay Pacha (the world of the living), Uku Pacha (the lower world) and Hanan Pacha (the celestial realm).
