“I think it will be a gamechanger very broadly, not just for people in my field,” said senior study author James Liu, a group leader at Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Research Campus. “It was a tool developed to answer a very obscure question, but I think all biologists can use the technique in their favorite samples.”

TLDR: Pandas are dope fiends!?

TIL that Pandas aren't born loving bamboo, but that it's an addiction with a dopamine component.

Those cute furry pandas are actually carnivores.

But they sit on their butts all day eating plants and getting high instead of chasing animals.

"some of the bamboo-derived miRNAs were found to regulate dopamine pathways, driving food motivation and the reward system linked to it. So if eating bamboo is a pleasurable, satisfying experience for a panda, it's more likely to be solely driven to seek out this trigger." newatlas.com/biology/pandas-ba

New Atlas · Pandas "tricked" into becoming the world's biggest bamboo fansBuilt to be carnivorous, giant pandas spend up to 16 hours a day on their backsides eating bamboo. But contrary to all the panda jokes, it's not because they're lazy or too dumb to know better. It's far more fascinating – and it may help humans, too.

New forms of life discovered inside human bodies
They resemble what scientists call #viroids, which are infectious loops of #RNA known for their effects on plants. #Obelisks share certain traits with these plant pathogens, yet they appear in human-associated bacteria. Their discovery came about when researchers began analyzing massive #genetic libraries, searching for patterns that did not match any known organisms.
