Today's Jew of the Day is Rabbi David Ben Hassin!

Rabbi David Ben Hassin, also known as Rabbi David Hassine, is considered one of the greatest Moroccan poets. In his lifetime, he wrote over 260 poems, which were posthumously bound into a collection called Glory to David. These poems were notable for their beauty, their structure and use of Hebrew. They're also notable because during Ben Hassin's life, the Jews of Morocco suffered terribly, as his home of Meknes was struck by severe drout, and the Jews of Morocco were subject to regular antisemitic violence, including by Moulay Yazid, the Sultan of Morocco, whose first order was persecuting the Jews of Morocco, and under his reign, the Jews suffered regular beating and destruction of property.

Rabbi Ben Hassin's response was to create poetry honoring their lives, and many of his poems focus on the themes of exile, redemption and renewal for the Jewish people.
