My REDnote account was permanently banned for this post. It was titled "Question everything and use critical thinking."

Text in English: Mao was a genocidal dictator whose Great Leap Forward led to millions of avoidable deaths and whose Cultural Revolution resulted in widespread persecution.

Change my mind.

Just 20min getting onto #Substack Notes - I was already angry. The algorithm delivered a Substack note to me about Chinese media, and I got so angry because, oh why repeat it here. Basically they described a nation of 1 bil people from diverse ethnicities as lacking "critical thinking skills about public policy" due to being brainwashed by algorithms. 👀 you are one to talk, writer from the US, who invented the term brain rot and elected the orange one! 😆

Anyway, it's easy to spot an article with a naughty/racist angle against china - they often depict the people as less than human and as a homogenous blob.

Anyway, what I am saying is it's really sad that Substack, once a haven for me where I can just flit from one lovely newsletter to the next has become another algorithmic rage pusher. I am trying to find new Substacks to read and I keep thinking Notes is where I can find them. I should know better but the programming is real 😆.

That is why retreating to #Mastodon and #RedNote (xiaohongshu) is such a relief. I don't have to be fed BS like this. First, because on Mastodon I have control over my feed. Two, if there's an algo like on XiaoHongShu, it's excellent. Seriously, best algorithm I've encountered. My feed is designed to delight me, so I get fed cooking recipes, cats, dogs and handsome actors 🫢. It only gets sour when I get undisciplined and click on something I shouldn't 😅.
The people I follow and those who deign to follow me are rational folks and lovely and from all nations.
Of course I still get reply guys, but they're easily handled with a block and mute, and they do me a favour by appearing so I can deselect them from my feed 😁

Life can be incredible sometimes. I post frequently on RedNote/Xiaohongshu. Last night I read a poem I'd written in 1971. Great reaction to it including this bit of text from a Chinese poet, Su Shi. It's from 1082 but the sentiment carries through the centuries. I'll read more of his work and profusely thank the follower who commented with this on my post. I call it serendipity. From 'Ode to the Red Cliffs'.

Day five: Multi-cultural bullshit

“Chinese language #influencers who mostly post lifestyle content are interviewing election candidates on the social media app #Rednote, allowing politicians to bypass an apparent “shadow ban” on #campaigning by the app and reach a disengaged but vital audience.

The interviews with influencers who usually post about food, real estate and shopping have been published on a platform that is not actively monitored by the Australian Electoral Commission due to Rednote’s scale and the commission’s resources.

#ScottYung, the #Liberal candidate for the ultra-marginal Sydney seat of #Bennelong, where almost one-third of residents have #Chinese ancestry, has featured in multiple interviews shared by #Mandarin speaking influencers on Rednote in recent weeks.”

I note Scotty (another Scotty) highlighted himself due to State campaigning irregularities in 2019. Johhny (War crimes) Howard is all over the #Bennelong campaign. Howard, one step away from #CCP influence campaign. Handy Andy Hastings will be in fits.

This isn’t a “Chinese thing”, this is a “Politics thing” where a multicultural background is weaponised for candidates against the rest of Australian #voters.

I find it fascinating that birds just come with engineering instructions.

Currently watching sunbirds build a nest at my balcony and I always wonder how they know how to do what they do

Ps: Realise that people thought this were the birds I am talking about lol. No, these are taken from xiaohongshu, and these are magpies.

Misinformation was rife as the wildfires spread across Los Angeles last month, and that wasn’t just happening in English language media. For @thexylom, Aorui Pi explains how platforms like WeChat and RedNote served as a vector for fake news, which may have made life harder for Chinese immigrants living in fire-affected areas.

The Xylom · How Unverified Claims About the LA Wildfires Spread Across Chinese-Language Media “People were confused. It was almost as if both the fire and misinformation were too big to contain.”

During the #TikTokBan some have characterized #RedNote as an opportunity for #Chinese and western netizens to finally talk to each other, I wonder if anything came out of that? Because from my experience I see that some #international #students (especially Chinese, but certainly applicable to others as well) - already in the West and have little language barrier - don't meaningfully interact outside of their ethnic groups (beyond necessity), and the cause of that should be explored.

I've been watching many videos of North-Americans suffering from Culture Shock after joining #RedNote. Even if you are not interested in #China, I encourage you to do something similar and learn about any other country of your choosing. It is always an eye-opening and enriching experience. And if you want to talk about #Brazil, just ask :)

tldr
Tiktok's algorithm is considered proprietary tech, and since the owner, Bite Dance, is a Chinese company, a law prevents the sale.

US and Chinese people get to compare daily life, and it is the first time for mass communication, because before we couldn't reach each other, and the translation software wasn't good enough.

China says it is a way to share hearts.
US govt says, we gonna ban that one too.

2of 2

it's happening. it's fucking happening. people are fleeing #instagram, #facebook, #x, #tiktok and many of them know that #rednote, as welcoming as it is, can't be a long term solution. for the first time, a huge number of people are looking for a decentralized social media not owned by rich, evil scumbags. six months ago, you wouldn't have been able to get them off those sites at gunpoint. now they are actively studying the #fediverse and joining en masse. I never thought I'd see this day

Looks like RedNote/Xiaohongshu is officially on the radar of JFHQ-DODIN. We got a list today of domains to block and scans to run to identify any GFE that has Red Note. TikTok is still on the blocked list.

Annoyingly, in a meeting today, Salt Typhoon was acknowledged as still being a big problem, but no updates were given on what actions, if any, will now be taken given the change of direction from the new administration.
