I like to binge a drama/crime/noir/scifi as much as anyone but there are days when a 3-part series about a father and son who painstakingly restore old ceramics in Japan is just the ticket #repair

Hello mastodon.art folks! Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Miah, a potter from West Michigan. I've been doing ceramics for 11 months and recently started an apprenticeship with Peter Johnson (no relation).

My life up until last November has mostly revolved around tech, but the ceramics bug has bit me and now I spend most of my free time in the pottery studio honing my skills.

Reassembled this early-2000s Denon AV receiver for the second time tonight. It was my friend's when he blew one of the channels, and it's been sitting in my study waiting to be repaired for almost four years...

This era is hard because it's both fully computerised and almost all analog. Daughterboards, interconnects, and sprawling complexity galore. Did anyone ever use all those S-Video inputs?

Still, it's pleasant to feel the presence of Serious Japanese Engineers in suits and ties, and imagine them designing close to the limits of what was possible in consumer electronics at the time.

(Not to mention that this is actually repairable, and has a pretty decent service manual.)

3 years ago I bought my Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar. It worked flawlessly until a week ago. When the left middle button (Mode/Up) stopped working. Soaking the watch in warm soapy water didn’t help - it could have removed sweat/salt residue.

On Friday I contacted Garmin and today I posted the watch to them. They will replace it for free with a “new” (refurbished/recertified) one. Should only take a couple of days.

It was no questions asked resolution. This was suggested by them in their first direct reply.

Didn’t expect a completely free of charge (not even postage) replacement for a 3 year old watch.

While I am still critical on their Connect+ subscription and AI stupidity, I am positively surprised by the customer service so far (also the speed - got a reply within 60 minutes using their support form)

I have been doing 1-2 runs per week without a watch all year long. So I should be fine to do a couple more of them.

New #blog post:

"Fixing my Pixel 6's USB port issue with a trimmed down cocktail stick"

The title rather says it all, really.

I am pleased to have extended the useful life of my phone.

Thanks to all of you who chatted about this with me yesterday!

I've done the lights on the car, and uh, made some small body modifications to make it safe... and now I need to hand it to the pros I think.

I need a weld on the exhaust, and the brakes are imbalanced. I'm not equipped or either of these repairs.

I got pretty far though. 🙂

I remembered this #poem (quoted in full below) which reminded me of a fun #language quirk in #Hungarian: "i repair <subject>" and "love (noun)" are both "szerelem".
Further proof that #repair / #mending / #maintenance is a love language. :neofox_uwu:

"Atlas

There is a kind of love called maintenance
Which stores the WD40 and knows when to use it;

Which checks the insurance, and doesn’t forget
The milkman; which remembers to plant bulbs;

Which answers letters; which knows the way
The money goes; which deals with dentists

And Road Fund Tax and meeting trains,
And postcards to the lonely; which upholds

The permanently rickety elaborate
Structures of living, which is Atlas.

And maintenance is the sensible side of love,
Which knows what time and weather are doing
To my brickwork; insulates my faulty wiring;
Laughs at my dryrotten jokes; remembers
My need for gloss and grouting; which keeps
My suspect edifice upright in air,
As Atlas did the sky."

Is there a current known exploit for #Android / #Samsung devices to unlock the device without a known PIN / Passcode?

A relative asked for a modern (probably rather well updated) device nobody knows the unlock code anymore. I can confirm they own the device and are able to give me full permission.

I don't know an active exploit out of my head. I assume modern Androids don't allow for brute-force anymore either (virtual HID via USB).

Any ideas?

🧵 2/2 turns out, the distro had nothing to do with it.

A gear in the 3rd party toner cartridge broke. Luckily i still had the old OEM part laying in the e-waste box.

One dusty gear salvage mess later - it's fixed. 👍
Ka-ching, 20 bucks for a new toner saved. 😃

One of the best things that happened at today's Repair Cafe was this chap caught me as he was leaving to say thanks for recommending Mint Linux for his son's old machine last month. First time Linux users, the lad (14ish?) was stood there thumbs up and beaming. #Linux #LinuxMint #RepairCafe #repair
