The rain really brings out the details in one of my favorite rhododendrons. This Rhododendron sino grande, a species found in Southwest China and fairly rare in cultivation. The big flower bracts are nice. But really one grows them for the huge leaves-- these are about 30 cm long but they can reach almost a meter in mature specimens. The plant itself reaches 10 meters in the wild but half that in cultivation. And it grows really slowly.

I just noticed that a couple of my mature #rhododendron seem to be sick. The leaves usually curl in only during extremely cold weather, but these look like they never got the message that it's warmer and spring is nearly here. It was a fairly normal winter; cold with a few light snowfalls. The kicker is that some branches are affected while others look normal. Any ideas? I hate to pull these out. #Gardening #Landscaping #Backyard

Rhododendron 'Seta' is a lovely early blooming hybrid (spinuliferum x moupinense). You wouldn't know it was snowing with temperatures down near 20° F just a week ago. As its buds open they will reveal pink and white striped flowers. Seta provides some welcome bright color in an otherwise pretty dormant garden. Ours has grown to about 5 feet tall in 25 years.

Several azalea specimens in the azalea collection at the US National Arboretum; these are all "Glenn Dale" hybrid varieties, distinguished by the spotted throats, bred by the National Arboretum at an introduction station in Glenn Dale, Maryland (about 2 km from my house!). In the Arboretum, Washington, DC, 20180505.
