I met this morning the mayor of Shuto Orizari in #Skopje. This municipality provides a positive example of local governments' key role in improving the lives of #Roma. Afterwards, I saw and discussed ongoing problems inc. poverty and street children, and exposure to environmental hazards.

Deeply concerned by plight of #Roma in Zaharna Fabrika, Sofia, homeless since demolitions of last week. I urge central & local authorities to act now to prevent further deterioration of a critical situation. I will continue dialogue with the Gvt of #Bulgaria on this issue.

On day 2 of my visit to #NorthMacedonia, I met with key partners: a wide array of civil society, the Ombudsman & the Equality Body. They shared their insights on the #humanrights challenges faced by #Roma & on urgent environmental issues of the country.

Authorities started flattening illegally-built Roma homes in a Sofia neighbourhood despite a European Court of Human Rights ruling, which said demolition should not proceed until a legal challenge is resolved.

On 15 April 1945 the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp was liberated. Some 50,000 prisoners including around 3,500 children died in the camp of hunger, disease or physical violence. Those who dies included Jews, Czechs, Poles, anti-Nazi Christians, homosexuals, Roma and Sinti. When the camp was liberated soldiers found thousands of unburied bodies.

Roma push France to recognise the Holocaust-era genocide.

Young Roma in France have launched a campaign calling on the state to officially recognise the genocide of Roma and Sinti people during World War II.

At the centre of their message are wartime letters written by their ancestors from internment camps – unanswered pleas for help sent to the French authorities.
