#Landlords gouge victims of #LAFires

"The devastating fires in Los Angeles have killed 24 people. The fires have burned tens of thousands of acres, and hundreds of thousands of #Angelenos have been forced to evacuate. The blaze has destroyed at least 12,000 structures and thousands of people have nowhere to live.

"For most people, this is a horrific tragedy. But numerous landlords in the area are treating it as a #MoneyMaking opportunity.

"A review of rental listings revealed dozens of properties where the landlords have sharply increased their prices since the fires began on January 7. Popular Information used Zillow to identify rental homes in communities near the areas impacted by the fires — including #PacificPalisades, #SantaMonica, #ManhattanBeach, #HuntingtonBeach, and the #SanFernandoValley — that have increased their asking price over the last week.

"While not every rent increase is evidence of #exploitation, the timing and scale of many increases strongly suggest #PriceGouging is occurring.

"In Manhattan Beach, for example, Popular Information identified a five-bedroom home listed on December 31, 2024, for $8,750 per month. By Monday, the rent was bumped up 125 percent to $19,750 monthly.

"But it is not only luxury properties with ocean views whose prices have skyrocketed in the last week.

"A three-bedroom home in #Tujunga, listed for $4,100 on December 28, was increased to $8,500 on January 7, the day the Pacific Palisades fire broke out, 93 percent higher than its initial listing price."

1,000+ structures burnt in #PacificPalisades fire, but has not destroyed the #GettyVilla museum containing many priceless artworks and "remains safe and intact," a museum spokesperson said.

#EatonFire in #SanGabrielValley has spread across 2000 acres and taken at least two lives.

The #HurstFire just south of Newhall/Santa Clarita area has grown to 505 acres and affects communities north of the 210 to the I-5 split.

A new conflagration west of #SanFernandoValley dubbed the #WoodleyFire started at 6:15 a.m. on #NorthWoodleyAvenue just west of the 405 / north of 101 Freeway in the #Sepulveda Basin and so far has affected approx 200 acres, and threatening to cross #Burbank Ave

SF Valley and Burbank community of the Fediverse, I need your help recovering a lost bag with some of my artwork in it! This past Saturday evening (11/9) I ran into a public transit snag and walked from one bus stop on Pass Ave. and Burbank Blvd. to catch another bus on Pass and Magnolia Blvd. It’s a long story, but somewhere in the madness, I set my bag down and forgot to pick it back up. Along with my two framed art pieces, I also had all of my dice and my mini in that bag- one set of dice was a gift from my DM in our current campaign. Both my partner and I have our contact information in that bag. I can’t offer a reward… but I would love to have my art and DnD items back.

68 Peckerwood gang members indicted, 42 in custody, in Southern California on RICO charges related to drug trafficking, firearms, and fraud charges.

Apart from all of that, the Peckerwoods are a neo-nazi gang closely affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood and well established in the US prison system.

The U.S. Attorney cited one example of one gang member named Ryan Bradford, who was found to be selling drugs and manufacturing explosive devices when he was arrested. A “treasure trove” of white supremacist paraphernalia was also found, Estrada added, including replica Nazi uniforms and posters of Adolf Hitler.

Bradford also allegedly made social media posts indicating he wanted to murder and commit genocide of Jewish people.

“In fact, when we searched his home, we found a notepad that had written as its New Year’s resolution: ‘Bake every single Jew,'” Estrada said. “That’s what this group stands for…that’s what the Peckerwoods are all about.”
