People working on Linux or the BSDs (or illumos based OSes, etc), are you using two monitors? And, if so, what do you use them for?

TIL that SmartOS have ready Debian VMs so if i can't run it in a LX zone, i can just grab a ready made zvol and run it in a bhyve zone.

testing: can we install #Mastodon in a #SmartOS zone? It seems that pkgsrc provides all the packages we need, now we just need to see whether #postgresql, #nodejs, #ruby, or any of the Mastodon codebase assumes things about #Linux that are not true in a #Solaris (/ #SunOS / #Illumos, whatever you want to call it) environment.

Today I'm adding a few non-regular to me #SmartOS zones to share some lab VMs (via BHYVE) with my friend - and I'm surprised with the flow of the things, hehe:
- NetBSD zvol booted like a charm, no worries;
- FreeBSD zvol boots, but doesn't read network configuration, so I edited rc.conf to have some static IP and route;
- OpenBSD (6, from 2017) fails to boot, which is a something.

I'm gonna start doing a "Bug of the Day" kind of thing. Where when I encounter a bug. I'm gonna post what it was, and how I solved it. For my first one:

#SmartOS #Bhyve instance doesn't allocate enough space for a indestructible snapshot like it does with a #KVM instance. Definitely not intentional.

Solution: Add another gigabyte to it's zfs filesystem.

Since then I’ve done a bunch of #sysadmin work (mostly #Solaris) followed by OS (#solaris #illumos #smartos #zfs) development and more recently various storage stuff (#nvme #nvmeof #roce #spdk #bluefield #dpu #smb).

I love #hiking through the #wilderness and other natural areas.
