#MahmoudKhalil, a prominent figure in pro-#Palestinian #protests against #Israel's #war on #Gaza, was arrested by #immigration agents in NYC March 8. #Trump falsely called the protests #antisemitic & vowed to #deport foreign #students who took part.

Khalil had condemned #antisemitism & #racism in interviews w/news outlets last year. Khalil, a #legal permanent #resident of the #UnitedStates, says he is being punished for his political #speech in violation of the #Constitution's #FirstAmendment.

Federal #immigration agents illegally arrested Dr. #BadarKhanSuri on Mar 17 in retaliation for his constitutionally-protected #speech in support of #Palestinian rights & his family’s ties to #Gaza, & then secretly transported him to #Louisiana & then #Texas in an effort to prevent him from accessing courts.

Since then, the #Trump admin has detained Dr. Khan Suri in an #ICE facility 1,500 miles away from his family, despite the fact that he is a lawful #visa holder married to a #UScitizen.

The reich-wing administration has criticized #Germany's decision to ban #afd the far-right party, after a deep review of their activities.

According to columnist Heather Cox Richardson, Germany's Foreign Office responded thusly:

This is #democracy. The decision is the result of a thorough & independent investigation to protect our #Constitution & the #ruleoflaw. It is independent #courts that will have the final say. We have learnt from our history that #rightwing #extremism needs to be stopped.

Our Founders believed in freedom of #speech, but were alert to the threat of #populism. Some of their attempts to mitigate that threat through representation government worked out reasonably well — separation of powers, the House of Representatives — while others — the Senate, the Electoral College — developed largely as sops to smaller states or slave states, have not.
