Natasha WarnerI just re-watched Child's Play. Wow, Icheb's parents are up there in the ranks of worst parents in Trek, and as we know, that has quite a list of contenders! Still, I thought his mother came across as surprisingly loving when they first got there, considering what she must have actually been thinking. I really enjoyed the scenes between Janeway and Seven in this episode, with Janeway calling Seven on her bias and her attempts to control others' choices. Natasha WarnerI just re-watched Spirit Folk. I know a lot of people don't like this episode, but among holodeck malfunction episodes, I think it's very good. OK, shoot the control panel and what does it do? Of course, turns off the holodeck safeties! That must be the most vulnerable part of a holodeck's program, for how often they break! I only wish it was as easy as depicted here to get a violent mob to stand down and rethink things, and as easy to get people to drop a conspiracy theory. But I think it did depict the rapid slide into conspiracy theory, paranoia, and mob mentality really well. This episode also seems to answer the question of what leads to holograms becoming sentient or borderline (like Vic Fontaine): if you take out the part of the program that keeps them from perceiving things outside the story, and then let it run at length or let the characters retain their memories from one session to another without resetting them, you get growth in the characters, and presumably eventually you get sentient beings like the Doctor. Vic remaining as a borderline case. I'd like Trek to come back to this issue someday. I love the bit where Michael Sullivan, in the holodeck lab, figures out that Harry and Tom are trying to make him stop perceiving things outside his own world and immediately plays along. They definitely underestimated him. Natasha WarnerI just re-watched Blink of an Eye, one of my favorite Trek episodes ever. I love the clever idea that time on the planet is moving so much faster than on Voyager, so the planet goes through thousands of years of development and change while Voyager is parked for maybe a few days or a week or so trying to figure out how to get out of orbit. The Doctor's loss of his son is interesting. Based on his attachment to his previous holofamily, I would think he would be more upset at losing out on his son's childhood and life, but I guess he knows his son may be fine, just without him. I hope the astronaut managed to get them some info on the Doctor's son's life. I like Janeway's pep talk to the astronaut when he says he's not brave enough to deal with the situation. I do think it's amusing how they made the clothing and technology through various time periods look like European Middle Ages and like about the 1940's, so we can recognize the time period by our own frame of reference. I loved that this episode treats Anthropology as a science, or at least as a serious field of inquiry. I love it when Trek addresses sciences other than physics and medicine. Also, no matter how bad a job Voyager did overall on representation of Native Americans through Chakotay, I just love the irony of them having the main anthropologist on the ship be a Native person.
