The word "startup" often doesn't mean what people think it means.

What people think it means: An innovative new tech company that uses the lean startup and agile development methodologies. The business has a small team that tests hypothesis by creating minimum viable products that are reproducable, and can be scaled up rapidly.

What it actually means: A new tech company that often has no business plan, and creates the minimum product it needs to grift money from venture capitalists. The VCs, in turn, hope that cash and hype will allow them to either grift a takeover out of a big tech company (like Google or Microsoft) that's trying to protect a monopoly, or grift cash from Wall Street.

A VC-backed startup with Sam Altman as their lead investor* wants the keys to your Mac.

Yeah, no.

Got hit in a big (>50%) round of #layoffs from the #startup I was most recently at. I'm taking some time to relax, reset, and dream about the future, but I'll be starting up a serious job hunt soon. #getfedihired

If you know of anyone looking for a staff-level backend/data engineer with experience mentoring juniors, hit me up. No LLMs or Blockchain, please.

I also have a community full of extremely talented former coworkers to which I'm happy to make introductions.

In #Island betreibt Climeworks zwei Anlagen.

“They’re running the place like a #startup, rather than like a public entity governed by federal law.”

Its a sad day for Australian Universities. Uni is a place of #learning, #study and #research where new ideas are explored, theories are proposed, tested and understood in exquisite detail. Hogwarts.

They are not, and never will be places where new technical ideas are translated into a product that may or may not work, for fickle comercial customers, while on a short cash timer. Animal House.

Academics are a bad #peopleware fit for Startups. Specialists instead of scrappy generalists. The kind of people who do successful startups “DO”, then “quickly adapt”. Or fail, go out of business and wash dishes.

“They’re running the place like a #startup, rather than like a public entity governed by federal law.”

This is a sad day for Aus education. #Universities are for #learning, #teaching and #research. To understanding and present stuff at its most fundamental level to exquisite detail. 🤓

Startups are a lot of times at best, #prototype #engineering. Making something that might work, with a fickle market, timed with a stop watch of cash.

The fit for #academics, who are mostly careful, methodical, precise simply get in the way of scrappy, hard charging back yard hacks. It’s laughable. 🤣😳😖☺️
