Serbian Students Cross Hungarian Border on Bike Ride to Strasbourg
Serbian students cycling to Strasbourg on a mission to alert Europe about the protest movement sweeping their home country reached Hungary on Friday.
Students have been occupying university buildings and leading mass rallies in Serbia for over four months, initially inspired by an attack on protesters in front of the Belgrade Faculty of Dramatic Arts on November 22.
The protests began after the external canopy of the recently renovated Novi Sad railway station collapsed last November, killing 16 people.
As the website on which the public can follow their trip live explains, for the students, “this is not just a cycling tour – it is a journey of hope, resistance and the voice of all those who have been silenced”.
“That’s why we are going to Strasbourg. Not because we expect someone else to solve our problems, but to make the world hear the voice of Serbia – for European institutions to exert pressure on the authorities and stand in defence of the rights of all those who are forced to remain silent,” the students wrote.
They added that, “our streets, once places of hope and connection, have now become scenes of fear and injustice”.
“Friends and colleagues have been arrested for speaking the truth, and institutions have turned into tools of repression,” they continued.
Samedi, une extraordinaire conjonction de circonstances m’a amenée 1) sous le ciel bleu 2) avec un appareil photo 3) et du temps devant moi 4) au port du Rhin, chose qui n’était jamais arrivée. Alors j’ai fait un crochet par la maison Rhein Fischer, un ancien hôtel-restaurant du début du XXe siècle (plus tard connu sous le même nom francisé "Au pêcheur du Rhin") dont l’adresse se situe aujourd’hui rue du Péage. C’est le seul édifice classé dans ce quartier qui a été abondamment remodelé au fil du siècle écoulé et se trouve à nouveau en pleine métamorphose (et un peu en plein fouillis, il faut le dire). Je crois qu’il sert simplement d’habitation actuellement.

On retrouve sa silhouette sur cette carte postale du début du XXe (souaïpe) piquée sur le site des DNA. Elle montre aussi le pont métallique du tramway qui enjambait alors le canal du Petit Rhin, comblé dans les années 1950. Bien que le tram actuel passe à nouveau à cet endroit (cf. le bout de câble dans l’angle supérieur gauche de la photo de samedi), cette ancienne ligne datant de l’époque allemande, qui desservait déjà Kehl, semble avoir disparu après la première Guerre mondiale.

Et c’est ainsi, chers amis, que nous inaugurons - modestement mais officiellement - le #bricktour2025. Avril 2025.

I wanted to make a stork for a while, but the legs threw me off. They are long and thin, and that did not seem doable, so I just completely changed the proportions, which worked surprisingly well!
