I finally finished this custom USB Controller using a 12 position switch. The customer will be using it as a USB MIDI Controller where they want to select 11 different settings.

It's a bit taller than I'd like but the switch is pretty tall and I need a certain amount of space for the PCB and controller.

The enclosure is 3D printed and so is the knob. The multi-color prints for both came out great.

I've just listened to an #ITSecurity presentation, which gave me a few more nightmares to worry about.

First, there is #Shodan , a search engine for the #Internet (as opposed to the World Wide Web), aka "how to find hackable things on the Internet". If you have any devices accessible via the Internet - such as security cameras - it can probably be found there. And there are numerous people and companies who leave these devices unsecured - as the presenter demonstrated.

Also, #USB cables exist which look like the real thing but contain secret WLAN access for hackers. They cost around $200 these days, and can only be distinguished from the real thing by #CT scans.

one #goBags tip i have is to get some of #Waterfield (aka #sfbags) gear pouches or #bellroy's fantastic zipper tech valets. you can put a large capacity 29000mAh+ power bank, some a-to-c c-to-c a-to-mini|micro #usb and room for adapters and wall chargers too. zip the little guy together and toss in your bag. i have two and i pull one when i am taking a trip that doesn't involve fleeing the country.

again, bellroy is a #bcorp and you'll love their gear.

Hello Linux friends. Is there any way to use my computer to test USB-C cables?

I want to plug both ends of a cable into two different USB ports on my laptop.

I want to see the emarkers, resistors, and any other data about the cable. Maybe even run a speed test?

Is there a Linux utility which will do that?

(Yes, I know I can get external dongles. I want to do it locally without buying more stuff.)

Side note: #USB cables aren't just harmless 5V any more. 50V can now be found in some of them, so don't go carelessly stripping their casings off—they can shock you! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB-C#Po

Why they went with more voltage, and not more current like you'll find inside PCs, I don't know. I'm sure there's some perfectly sensible answer that goes over my non-EE head.

I bought a couple of these MicroCenter #USB #flash drives yesterday and I'm going to have to return them because they get **very** hot to the touch after being plugged in for a few minutes, even with no file operations going on.

The ID is 2450:0512 but 2450 isn't a recognized manufacturer code; the packaging only says it was made in Taiwan. So this is a warning not to get the ones with the metal casing, but also a request to see if anyone knows who the maker is.

The best thing about things like that would be if they persuaded every operating system to handle the Unicode usage page (0x10) for USB HIDs, something that custom wacky keyboard builders have been asking about on WWW fora for a decade.

And can we just declare by fiat that it is de facto UTF-16 whatever the spec says?

Hmm. I must put this on the check list for my keyboard driver, I suppose. Practice what one preaches and all that. (-:

#Tech question:

I have two #USB 3 slots on my computer, but it seems like they cannot perform I/O operations simultaneously, e.g. moving files from one connected flashdrive to the other, whilst it is no problem to do so from a device connected to one of the USB 2 slots to one connected to a USB 3 slot.

Is this normal behaviour, is it a #Linux issue or is it just my computer?

Note: I can connect 2 devices to the USB 3 ports, use them after the other, without disconnecting one.

How can one retro-fit a #USBA port to a 10 year old #thinkpad when the #minipcie internal USB port card device (see link below) is not on the #lenovo #whitelist e.g. of a #thinkpad_x230
BTW the #usb port is for then fitting a #lora #rnode or #meshtastic #note inside the #laptop case. This video shows the problem.
