Statement by VP #KamalaHarris on #ILA & #USMX Agreement
Tonight the International #Longshoremen’s Association & the #UnitedStates #Maritime Alliance came together to reach a tentative agreement that reopens the East Coast & Gulf #ports, & I want to applaud all involved for their efforts. 'Causing heads to explode': Alarms sound as #ProTrump union leader accused of '#sabotage'
Story by Matthew Chapman
October 3, 2024
"Political observers and experts are raising alarms about the International #Longshoreman's Association union strike, which has seen #dockworkers suspend their duties unloading cargo at ports along the East and Gulf Coasts — speculating whether the head of the union is attempting economic sabotage in favor of former President Donald #Trump.
"#USMX, the key guild of maritime employers, offered the ILA upwards of 60 percent salary increases in their new contracts. The ILA, however, is demanding even higher increases, as well as the continuation of exorbitant fees to handle shipping containers — a practice so expensive, according to maritime journalist John Konrad, that U.S. ports frequently ship freight over roads hundreds of miles at ten times the expense to consumers rather than transport containers onto secondary barges at a fraction of the price to consumers — as well as a total ban on any new technology to automate ports, which industry experts have warned could destroy the competitiveness of U.S. shipping.
"The extreme nature of the demands has caused speculation among observers that the whole thing might be a ploy to get Trump elected."
#Longshoremen agree to suspend #strike, reopen #ports
Striking #dockworkers reached a tentative agreement w/port operators on Thurs for a 62% wage increase & have extended their contract through Jan 15 to bargain over remaining issues.

Biden urges port operators to increase wages after 45,000 workers go on strike
Joe Biden has urged port operators to give workers a “meaningful increase” in pay after tens of thousands went on strike,
prompting some of the busiest ports in the US to brace for crippling disruption.
About 45,000 port workers represented by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) began walking off the job after their contracts expired at midnight,
with 36 ports along the east and Gulf coasts affected.
They typically handle about half of the nation’s ocean shipping.
Talks over a new contract between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have broken down,
and the union dismissed a last-ditch offer from operators hours before the strike was due to began.
Hours after the strike began, the White House issued a robust statement calling on USMX to negotiate a “fair” contract that reflects “the substantial contribution” of ports workers to America’s economy.
Ports-strike CEO’s crude attacks on Biden and Democrats
An executive representing ports where tens of thousands of workers went on strike this week
made a series of critical and crude remarks about Joe Biden,
tied Kamala Harris to concerns about over-taxation,
and appeared to endorse a rightwing conspiracy theory.
#David #Adam, chairman and chief executive of the United States Maritime Alliance ( #USMX ), attacked prominent Democrats in a string of social media posts uncovered by the Guardian.
It comes after about 45,000 dockworkers at ports along the US east and Gulf coasts walked off the job
– the first such strike since 1977
– as part of a dispute between the USMX and the International Longshoremen’s Association over pay and automation.
The sweeping strike,
disrupting 36 ports from Maine to Texas,
has already raised fears of supply shortages and price increases on the eve of November’s election.
A month ago, when a LinkedIn user suggested that “everything Biden has touched in the past is turning to shit!” -- Adam replied: “The runny kind….”
It was part of a discussion about how Biden’s student-debt relief plan was being held up in the courts.
In another comment on the thread, Adam wrote: “If ya can’t get an American Democrat to pay what they borrrowed [sic], how you gonna get a California illegal immigrant to pay back their $150K loan the CA Dems are offering?”
Three months ago, another user appeared to endorse a popular conspiracy theory surrounding the emergence of a totalitarian world government while commenting on a video of Biden discussing immigration. -- “Did I miss the vote America took in agreement of One World Order? Treasonous actions have consequences!” they wrote.
“I think Kerry and Gates voted two thumbs up on that a few years ago …” Adam replied.
“The Ocean Carriers represented by #USMX want to enjoy rich billion-dollar profits that they are making in 2024, while they offer #ILA #LongshoreWorkers an unacceptable wage package that we reject,” the #union said earlier Monday.
The #WhiteHouse said in a statement Monday that #Biden admin ofcls had met w/both sides & had been “working around-the-clock” over the weekend to avert a #strike.
The #US Maritime Alliance (#USMX), which represents the companies, said Mon just hours before a midnight deadline that negotiators had traded proposals in recent days & that it was offering 50% raises. The alliance said it was seeking a contract extension to allow talks to continue. The #union, which represents 47k workers, did not respond publicly to the operators’ 11th-hour offer.
The #strike will cause immediate disruptions at #ports that handle >½ of the #UnitedStates’ #trade in cargo containers. The effects are expected to ripple through the country, costing hundreds of millions of dollars a day or more & getting worse each day the #longshoremen remain off the job. It was unclear early Tues what the next steps might be in resolving the dispute between the International Longshoremen’s Association (#ILA) & #shippers & port operators. #USMX #shipping #dockworkers #economy

#Longshoremen’s #union walkout follows last-minute efforts by the #WhiteHouse to avert a strike.
Tens of thousands of #dockworkers launched a strike at #ports along the East Coast & the #GulfOfMexico on Tues, stranding stacks of shipping containers on docks & idling ships outside harbors in a threat to the #economy just 5 weeks before the election.
