Rob Farago<p>Almost 32% of the EVs sold in Australia is 2024 had <a href="https://aus.social/tags/V2L" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>V2L</span></a> (Vehicle to Load) capability, i.e. provided a 230V AC outlet. These were mainly <a href="https://aus.social/tags/BYD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BYD</span></a>, <a href="https://aus.social/tags/MG" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MG</span></a>, <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Kia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Kia</span></a>, <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Hyundai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hyundai</span></a> and <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Genesis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Genesis</span></a> models.</p><p>They do this by having a small inverter in the car to convert the DC from the battery pack into usable AC power ranging from 2.2kW to 3.3kW, either inside the car and/or via an external adaptor plugged into the AC charge port. Here are the top 25 models from 2024 and whether they currently support V2L and some photos of various model V2L adaptors.</p><p>V2L is a useful capability to use your EV battery to run small appliances when away camping or during a power blackout like your fridge, freezer, phone chargers, internet routers and even dialysis machines.</p><p><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/jan/01/amazing-queensland-mum-uses-electric-car-to-save-sons-life-with-dialysis-during-power-outage" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theguardian.com/environment/20</span><span class="invisible">24/jan/01/amazing-queensland-mum-uses-electric-car-to-save-sons-life-with-dialysis-during-power-outage</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-01-06/is-queensland-built-for-severe-weather-electric-vehicle-power/103287984" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">abc.net.au/news/2024-01-06/is-</span><span class="invisible">queensland-built-for-severe-weather-electric-vehicle-power/103287984</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-09-11/powering-home-with-electronic-vehicle-ev-storms-power-outage/104314934" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">abc.net.au/news/2024-09-11/pow</span><span class="invisible">ering-home-with-electronic-vehicle-ev-storms-power-outage/104314934</span></a></p><p>Unfortunately many of the biggest selling EV brands don’t support V2L yet, e.g. <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Tesla" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tesla</span></a>, <a href="https://aus.social/tags/BMW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BMW</span></a>, <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Volvo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Volvo</span></a>, <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Mercedes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mercedes</span></a> and <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Polestar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Polestar</span></a></p><p>Fortunately third parties are working on V2L devices as a retrofit option for Teslas, which don’t currently have V2L, using an external inverter. </p><p><a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/vortipower/vortipower-vp2-tesla-3-y-s-x-powershare-external-discharge" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">kickstarter.com/projects/vorti</span><span class="invisible">power/vortipower-vp2-tesla-3-y-s-x-powershare-external-discharge</span></a></p><p>Using an external inverter to provide V2L, connects directly to the EV battery DC via the CCS2 plug, and is a more expensive solution than a V2L adaptor provided by the EV manufacturer, which uses an inverter inside the EV. </p><p>This technology is similar to how future <a href="https://aus.social/tags/V2H" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>V2H</span></a> and <a href="https://aus.social/tags/V2G" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>V2G</span></a> could work on existing EVs.</p>
