There were definitely some difficulty spikes and a handful of bits of navigation which I got stuck on, but I got through the game on the hard difficulty after over a decade away from it with the hint system turned off. I started using the beam ammo more when I figured out I could replenish that from any container. Some enemy designs I like more than others, but everything worked (once I got over thinking I had to fight a boss from underneath its body).

I still haven't ever played the multiplayer. Maybe some other decade.

I finally got through all 3 forms of Emperor Ing as well as Dark Samus 3 and 4. Dark Samus took 3 attempts, but the game is nice enough to restart with the death of Mutated Emperor Ing if you die to that boss. Ammo isn't replenished, but energy is. One of my deaths was due to the timer on Dark Aether destabilizing after you take the final energy core. You get something like 8 minutes to both escape to Sky Temple Gateway and actually have that boss fight.

But really, Mutated Emperor Ing is about as big as a house, jumps around, charges at you and quickly shuts its mouth to goad you into wasting ammo. There are clouds of Nightbarbs and such to try to replenish resources, but it's nowhere near as easy as it was when bombing the puddles that travel across Emperor Ing Chrysalis. And getting to the Chrysalis required looking up a video to learn that charged Light beam shots will home in and take out tentacles.

It's been forever since I'd played that one and I had a blast. It's still hard as hell even to this day!

It sort of went how I expected it to, although I wasn't expecting to find 95% of the items on the 1st go. That morph ball unmorph in air to get to Kraid was a pain, but I got through the ROM hack in less than 4 hours.

Scribblemacher
Rolled Credits on #MetroidDread. The story in this game is nonsensical, but it was a delight to play. This is probably the only game in the series where I actually enjoy using shinesparks.

The final boss was bonkers too, as was the escape sequence.

#Metroid #Maytroid #VGCMay2025

Scribblemacher
I attempted the final boss of #MetroidDread last night. Suffice to say, I did not beat it.

First attempt I literally died before doing any damage at all. I got the pattern down for the 1st phase, but I take too many lasers to the face in the second. Each time I get a bit better.

I can see why people might rage quit or DNF because of the final boss. I think I can do it, but I'm liking Dread too much, so I'll go back and find expansions for a while. Some of these shinespark puzzles are bananas. #Maytroid #VGCMay2025 #metroid

I had to take a big step back. No, really, I was trying to fight the boss from underneath it, and it was so much better just standing in front of it. Going underneath didn't really protect me from attacks or let me switch which leg joint I was targetting that much quicker. I still would not have enough time to react to being sucked into the vortex when the boss brings its legs together, but the normal spin was easier to react to. The Quad CMs/MBs were also not that bad, but still not as good of a resource supply as just breaking an antenna was for the 2nd phase. The final phase... I still don't have great judgment of the depth when launching off the legs onto the head, but you only need to do it twice. So, I got the annihilator beam, found out that Sentinel's Path is easier after the boss fight, for some reason, and then got the Light Suit and started on the final roundup. I'm at 94%.

Scribblemacher
I think I've defeated all the EMMIs at this point. The devs are proud of it, and that's fine, I'm sure it was very complex to get working. But, it's too big and too complex.

This takes place in another boss room without any light crystals or beacons, which is fine as one last time before the Light Suit. But, even if Iexpend no missiles, power bombs, or beam ammo, when I break the bombable/boostable orbs at the "feet" of the boss, I'm only guaranteed energy drops the 1st time for each. Boost Guardian teaches that those ultra energies (which replenish an energy tank each) should be saved. But, each is the source of a floor-spreading attack, and I need to reduce its sources of damage. I already spend much of the 1st phase looking up at its joints, which toggle vulnerability without any rhyme or reason, and getting damaged by things I can't see, or getting sucked in by the spin you can't react to in time to break feet.

Scribblemacher
I couldn't resist, so I finally got a used copy of #MetroidDread and started it this weekend. There's a lot to like here: Samus controls like a dream and bosses feel much more skill based than other games in the series.

The EMMI's are frankly horrifying. I just beat the speed one and holy hell is it scary when it runs you down! I genuinely have to psych myself up and take a breath before entering one of those doors.

Taking my time, so I probably won't finish before the end of #Maytroid #VGCMay2025

That's OK, because shooting a missile still locks the boss in a deflection animation and I have many more of those this time around. I mostly avoided the boost ball attacks on the 2nd attempt. No problems with save points this time. I also got through the Caretaker without a problem, after I spent so long studying it from outside the arena when I couldn't figure out how to get to Dark Samus 2.

I've got Echo Visor and it gives you so little visual information. It also turns out you can usually hear the audio cues without it, it just makes them louder and lets you shoot the sound generators. Still going to need the annihilator beam for certain puzzles, so I didn't backtrack with it. Besides, I wanted to get the Screw Attack. Now it's a Metroid game.

There's a door you can open in the room where you get the Spider Ball which leads to a portal to Hive Dynamo Works and a Flying Ing Cache for Sky Temple Key 6. At the other spot, I cleared away junk to get access to the 2nd part of the puzzle in Main Gyro Chamber. And then I got stuck; I could hear the Dark Samus encounter teaser music playing, but it looked to me like I would need to come back with the Echo Visor. I looked at only 1 side side of the inner ring I stopped; a guide says the side I didn't look at has a spider ball track on it. Would have saved an hour on wandering if the track had just been on both sides.

A speedrunner made a video noting you can shoot the ground near them and the charged shot will home in on the nearest enemy, getting around the shield to freeze them. I'm still terrible at Blogg/Dark Blogg, and Ingsmashers are also a draining encounter.

Spider Guardian and Power Bomb Guardian are unique boss fights. I died 1 time to Spider Guardian, and there isn't an accessible save point after you enter Sanctuary Fortress's temple, so that's annoying. I didn't die against Power Bomb Guardian, which does have a save point nearby. Mark Brown's Boss Keys series complained about having to remember that spider ball track, but you're going to a boss fight in the dark version of a boss arena, so that makes some sense. After that I found 4 power bomb expansions. There was 1 in a room only accessible by 2 power bomb doors, but you still need another power bomb to reveal it. : /

Scribblemacher
Finished #MetroidPrime on hard mode. This is my 4th or 5th through the game overall so I obviously like it.

My only real complaint is that bosses are absolute slogs. The last two bosses took a good 30 minutes each. I don't think my health went below 75% so I wasn't really in danger; the fights just take forever.

I tried a few times to play with the motion controls on Switch, hoping it would make combat more exciting, but I never really got the hang of them. Never thought I'd miss the WiiMote!

At this point, I've finished all of the Metroid games I plan to finish for #VGCMay2025 #Maytroid, which was Metroid 1-4, Zero Mission, and Prime.

It seems the toxic water, while it doesn't drain energy nearly as quickly as an Ingstorm, is something like a non-Newtonian fluid; step into it without the Light Suit and you can't sink into it. Again, the guides and walkthroughs don't say why you need the Light Suit, just that you don't take damage from the toxic water. I picked up 1 of the 2 keys in Dark Agon Wastes, but it seems the other (which will require a Power Bomb) is also placed under toxic water, which I wasn't expecting for a desert. In hindsight, the room is named "Dark Oasis."

I finally made it to Sanctuary Fortress. I had tried out the Dark Visor + Seeker Missile trick to get an optional missile expansion already, but I misremembered the description of the door to get back to the G.F.S. Tyr as requiring Echo Visor, not that. Now I get to have my suit hacked by Rezbits!

I probably never used a power bomb for anything other than to open paths.

(Also works as a literally nuclear option for taking out fusion metroids).

#VGCMay2025 #Maytroid

Sky Temple Grounds has 3 keys in it, and I have 2 of them, so I thought I can go for the last. It turns out, I forgot about Ingstorms. An interesting thing about them is that if a room has an Ingstorm, it doesn't always affect the entire room. That said, I don't think there's a safe spot in the room which has Sky Temple Key #7 and you can see the Ing particles blowing in the screenshot on Omega Metroid. A walkthrough on GameFAQs claims you lose 80 energy per second in an Ingstorm. Without trying to go around them, I can just barely make it to the Flying Ing Cache in that room before running out of energy. That might be the only Sky Temple Key they guard, but they're effective. Still had some fun trying.

https://omegametroid.com/metroid-prime-2-echoes-walkthrough/sky-temple-keys/

If I hadn't rushed onto the dark temple after finally collecting it, I could have had another energy tank, a beam ammo expansion, and some missile expansions, plus find an ammo station. So, I wasn't as prepared as I could have been for the multiple phase Chykka fight and it was a bit more tense. The dark shredders do give a chance to get some supplies back during Chykka Larva, but they also just explode. When the Chykka Adult fight started, I wasn't doing great on ammo and then I wasted a bunch on trying to hit it when it can specifically break lock-on. I had trouble figuring out how best to use seeker missiles, but once I got to Dark Chykka things started clicking into place (unlike the arena, which split into 3 parts). First try!
