A Guy Named Brian (he/him)<p>Interesting historical analogies “It’s worth considering whether American opponents of Trumpism should be looking to Europe at all for historical analogies and social media burns. After all, the US has its own history of abiding intolerable legal oppression of a minority group. That system existed as recently as the 1960s, and it wasn’t called Vichy, but Jim Crow.”</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Politics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Politics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/USPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/VichyFrance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VichyFrance</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/VichyDemocrats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VichyDemocrats</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/JimCrow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JimCrow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DemocracyInDanger" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DemocracyInDanger</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ElectionsMatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ElectionsMatter</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jan/31/vichy-france-trump-democrats" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theguardian.com/us-news/2025/j</span><span class="invisible">an/31/vichy-france-trump-democrats</span></a></p>
Julé Cunningham<p>Like its author this memoir is a quiet survivor--after disappearing from sight when first published in 1945 'A Bookshop in Berlin' by Françoise Frenkel was rediscovered in a charity sale in Nice in 2010 and tells of her life opening a French language bookshop in Berlin shortly after WWI, fleeing to Paris in 1939, and time in Southern France evading the Vichy gendarmes and Germans. It has a searing immediacy though told with restraint making it all the more affecting.</p><p><a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/bookReview" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookReview</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reading</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/WITMonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WITMonth</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/VichyFrance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VichyFrance</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/memoir" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>memoir</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://gallimaufrybookstudio.com/a-bookshop-in-berlin-francoise-frenkel-witmonth/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gallimaufrybookstudio.com/a-bo</span><span class="invisible">okshop-in-berlin-francoise-frenkel-witmonth/</span></a></p>

Russell Phillips<p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/OnThisDay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnThisDay</span></a> in 1942 on <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Madagascar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Madagascar</span></a>, a representative of the <a href="https://mas.to/tags/VichyFrance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VichyFrance</span></a> governor arrived at Allied HQ to ask for surrender terms. Despite the very weak <a href="https://mas.to/tags/French" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>French</span></a> position, he argued and negotiated for hours.</p><p>As soon as he noticed the time was after midnight, he stopped arguing and signed the surrender. The delay meant that the campaign had lasted six months. Consequently, the French servicemen were entitled to a campaign medal and a pension.</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/MilitaryHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MilitaryHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/SecondWorldWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SecondWorldWar</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/WWII" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WWII</span></a></p>
