Elyse M Grasso<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@stveje" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>stveje</span></a></span> I used July as a <a href="https://historians.social/tags/writingMonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingMonth</span></a> and concluded that if I wanted to land vol 3, and later volumes in the series, I needed to consolidate my Notes. Political intrigue with multiple factions leads to too many characters.</p><p>Pulling in and restructuring the vol 3 text also was a proofreading pass to clean up the text and review the section I did not work on in July: not entirely wasted effort.</p><p>And NW exports ODF so I can pull the novel back into LibreOffice for formatting when the time comes.</p>
Autumn<p>Posting this again, because my server-federation broke:<br><br>I couldn't make a GoToSocial plush, so I made GoToSocial earrings instead.<br>Follow my making process in my latest blog post: <a href="https://ccw.icu/blog/making-custom-earrings/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://ccw.icu/blog/making-custom-earrings/</a><br><br><a href="https://gts.ccw.icu/tags/blog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blog</span></a> <a href="https://gts.ccw.icu/tags/writingmonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingmonth</span></a> <a href="https://gts.ccw.icu/tags/gotosocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gotosocial</span></a> <a href="https://gts.ccw.icu/tags/earrings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>earrings</span></a> <a href="https://gts.ccw.icu/tags/diy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>diy</span></a></p>

I remember when my floofson passed away a couple years ago, a friend gave me a cat-shaped pillow as kind of a sweet joke gift for Christmas. It was... absolutely hideous. Imposing and kind of geometric, there was almost no love for cats in the art itself, lol. I don't know where that pillow ended up. XD</p><p>For the last couple years' nanowrimos (now <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/writingmonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritingMonth</span></a> - <a href="https://WritingMonth.org" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://WritingMonth.org</a>), I focused on writing a bunch of blog posts for the month of November.<br>Since I'm already doing <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/100daystooffload" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>100DaysToOffload</span></a> (trying to write 100 posts in one year) this year, I think this November, I'll focus on paper: doing journaling and doodling every day. :D</p><p>Thanks for the inspiration, as always! &lt;3</p>
Amin Hollon 🏳<p>The writingmonth.org domain name is now renewed for another year. 🎉</p><p><a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/writingmonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritingMonth</span></a></p>
Lea<p>I'm going to try out <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/WritingMonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritingMonth</span></a> this month. I have a couple of first drafts I like but never did anything with. So I'm going to take one of them and edit (well, rewrite) it. I need to add an entire plotline around the villain that I ignored in the first draft. There are also a few inconsistencies that I have to resolve somehow. </p><p>So instead of tracking a wordcount on the website, I'll just track time spent. </p><p><a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a></p>
Amin Hollon 🏳<p>I could see this being an unwanted feature for some people, so I could also add an option to settings to disable it.</p><p>Very open to thoughts on this.</p><p><a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/writingmonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritingMonth</span></a></p>
Amin Hollon 🏳<p>Okay, hear me out, I had a cool idea for <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/writingmonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritingMonth</span></a>. I'll try to keep this from being too technical.</p><p>Long story short, by switching the underlying "element" in the code of the progress bars on your goals, I could tell your browser what the "ideal" progress is given the current date. I've attached a screenshot of a mockup/prototype of how this would look.</p><p>Here's my full tracking issue for this: <a href="https://codeberg.org/Freedom-to-Write/writing-month/issues/100" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://codeberg.org/Freedom-to-Write/writing-month/issues/100</a></p><p>I think I'll give this a shot tomorrow; it would take a little extra math on the backend to calculate the targets, but that's about it. And, once that is calculated, I can display it as text as well (since of course I shouldn't rely only on color to communicate).</p>
OrbitalMartian<p>I just updated my <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/writingmonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritingMonth</span></a> profile - feel free to add me as a buddy.</p><p><a href="https://writingmonth.org/~orbitalmartian/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://writingmonth.org/~orbitalmartian/</a></p>
Amin Hollon 🏳<p>Ha, the entire <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/writingmonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritingMonth</span></a> database dump takes up about 500kB, <em>uncompressed</em>.</p><p>I need to do resource-light projects more often, they're so much easier to host and backup than, say, <em>search engines</em> or <em>social media instances</em>.</p>

CJ :Polymaths: 👨‍💻<p>I've been seeing a lot of news about NaNoWriMo shutting down, and while I can't 100% confirm it myself as I didn't receive this email, I wanted to take a moment to boost a project I love:</p><p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://polymaths.social/@amin" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>amin</span></a></span> setup <a href="https://writingmonth.org" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">WritingMonth</a> - a fully open-source alternative to NaNoWriMo's web tracker platform - last year in response to NaNo's statement on AI.</p><p>While it is still in development, I've had a great time writing with it and <a href="https://codeberg.org/Freedom-to-Write/writing-month/pulls/46" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">contributing</a> <a href="https://codeberg.org/Freedom-to-Write/writing-month/pulls/60" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">to it</a>.</p><p>Last month (March) I set a goal to write 4 blog posts and seeing the tracker was a nice boost, and Amin recently added the ability to see buddy progress which was really fun to see his work move along as well!</p><p>If you're an author, I highly recommend you check out the project, and if you're comfortable writing Python/Flask there's a good amount of <a href="https://codeberg.org/Freedom-to-Write/writing-month/issues" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">open feature requests</a> that could use some extra hands.</p><p>I'm excited to see what this project ends up looking like in it's second year this upcoming November, and I hope to see some more authors pop up with goals throughout the year until then.</p><p>(If you do check it out, feel free to add me as a buddy! Amin Hollon 🏳<p>All signs point to <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/nanowrimo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NaNoWriMo</span></a> shutting down, apparently according to an email they sent out (I'd closed my account). I don't see anything on their site yet, but they do appear to have shut down their help desk.</p><p>First, I want to say that while the last two years from them have been especially disappointing, I'm grateful to NaNoWriMo for being one of the influences that first inspired me to take writing seriously.</p><p>Second, I want to remind people that this last November I launched an alternative, <a href="https://polymaths.social/tags/writingmonth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WritingMonth</span></a>.</p><p><a href="https://writingmonth.org" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://writingmonth.org</a></p><p>The initial development round was very rushed to get it out by November, but I plan to launch a full second development round starting in May, so we can have a much more complete finished product for this fall.</p><p>I also have Writing Month stickers, which I'm currently thinking I'll send out to code contributors who want them, at the end of the summer. I'll send pics when I have a moment.</p>
