Counted today for the #PedalPoll2024 #PPSV2024 count, Canada's national #bicycle count, now into its 4 year of data collection. Main observation this year was an impressive amount of foot traffic and the majority of cars counted had just one person in them. Data from previous years show that decent bike infrastructure is essential to see more #activeTravel rates. What we have on this street is sadly not decent #ZeroVisionHFX #BikeHFX #AirHaulers

"To be honest, if people followed municipal politics like they follow sports, there would be braying for blood. In sports it’s easy to recognize poor performance and poor leadership, because it shows up in the standings. In municipal politics those scoreboards are hidden behind titles like “attachment A” and “appendix C.” Another valuable civics lesson from #TheCoastHFX #NSPoli #ZeroVisionHFX

The Coast Halifax · Everything you need to know about HRM council’s Jan. 9 meetingBy Matt Stickland

@mbonsma It's exhausting to have to keep advocating for the basic needs of people outside of cars. Today's example from #ZeroVisionHFX is a sidewalk closed with no temporary sidewalk added. This is right outside a childcare & the blocked sidewalk leads to a bus stop. I added the real meaning of the sign underneath 🤷‍♀️

@mbonsma You did what any parent would do including me! I am just back from a walk where a family in front of me reached a crosswalk. As they crossed the child was waving the stupid flags that Halifax deems appropriate to attach to the crosswalk poles. EVEN THEN, two drivers couldn't wait to blow through the crosswalk before the family had reached the other side of the road! It makes my blood boil. As for those flags, @tomflood knows all about them! Clearly they don't help. #ZeroVisionHFX

@sps @wayemason I would prefer to see #SafeSystems approaches applied, to encourage responsible behaviour from drivers & make things easy & obvious to ensure compliance. But since that approach hasn't yet been fully adopted here, education can't hurt. Case in point, the number of drivers who still go staight on Vernon at the Jubilee intersection ignoring the "bicycle only" signs, or who ignore the "no RTOR" around the South Park Bike Lane. Confused drivers put everyone at risk #ZeroVisionHFX

@wayemason How much time is reasonable Waye? The IMP is 5 years old and built on other plans like the "Making Connections" AT plan from 2014. I found an interesting report last week, from 1999, called "Active Transportation 2000: A bikeway staretegy for the HRM". It references reports from 1991 - over 30 years ago. Is that the sort of timescale you mean? Screenshots below. That's half a lifetime of reports while the planet burns and people die on our streets #ClimateActionNow #ZeroVisionHFX

@IPEdmonton Yes, it is easier in some parts of the city than others. Very easy where we live in the West End. We joined #Communauto as soon as we moved here & ditched one of the 2 cars we'd needed in the suburbs. Everything we need is close by - a bus route to work at the end of our street & at least 3 #CarShare options within a 5 min walk. Cycling infrastructure still sucks in #ZeroVisionHFX but it is slowly being built (although well behind schedule).
