"Au printemps de 1944, la rareté, sinon la disparition affectait bien des choses. Pas de bois, pas de fer; les bons de monnaie-matière, fort énigmatiques, allaient ailleurs qu’ici. Pas de produits chimiques indispensables à l’entretien des collections : le paradichlorobenzène introuvable; ou, quand on réussissait à s’en procurer «au marché noir» à des prix inavouables, on s’apercevait bientôt que c’était du plâtre vaguement odorisé. Il fallut redoubler de soins manuels (brossage, nettoyage) et utiliser même les anti-mites de dernière valeur pour préserver les pièces. Au Jardin zoologique, les carnivores, montrant une résistance que je n’aurais soupçonnée, restèrent une fois 21 jours sans manger."
