Sen. #Adam #Schiff, D-Calif., on Sunday blasted President Donald Trump for his decision to fire 18 inspectors general late Friday night and accused the president of breaking the law.
“To write off this clear violation of law by saying, ‘Well,’ that ‘technically, he broke law.’
-- Yeah, he broke the law,” Schiff told NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”
His comment was responding to Sen. #Lindsey #Graham, R-S.C., who earlier in the program told “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker that

Pamela Hemphill,
a grandmother in her seventies who was jailed for taking part in the attempted insurrection at the US Capitol four years ago,
has said 
she will “refuse” a pardon from President-elect Donald Trump once he takes office.
A retired substance abuse counsellor from Boise, Idaho, who was being treated for breast cancer at the time of the riot,
Hemphill was spotted pushing past police lines three times when the attack was underway
and was later seen inside its rotunda telling fellow members of the mob:
“Come on in, come on, have fun… This is your house!”
Hemphill – who filmed her actions, posted the footage on Facebook and became known as the “#MAGA #Granny”, only to later break with Trump’s movement
– has said she wants no part of the 47th president’s clemency outreach.
️“I’m not going to be bullied by MAGA anymore, as those who went as far as calling my Probation Officer trying to get me in trouble backfired on them, thinking I would stop speaking out, just give me more confidence to continue!”
she wrote on X on Sunday.
“I will refuse a pardon from felon Trump!”
Hemphill was responding to a post by former Republican congressman #Adam #Kinzinger, who served on the bipartisan House committee that investigated the riot
and has likewise said he would reject a presidential pardon from Biden to shield him from retaliatory measures by Trump’s FBI or Justice Department.

Within a couple of minutes, I knew 
“The Last Republican”
(in theaters)
would be different.
That’s in part because #Adam #Kinzinger himself is a different kind of subject.
He gave a long interview to Pink in what appears to be his mostly emptied office just before he left the House of Representatives.
He’d been one of a handful of Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching Donald Trump in 2021
(after speaking against his first impeachment in 2019),
then served alongside Democrats and fellow Republican Liz Cheney on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
Needless to say, he was not popular in his party,
especially as other Republicans who had opposed Trump began to change their views.
The documentary spends most of its time letting Kinzinger explain why he feels as he feels and did what he did,
and why he’d do (most of) it again.
In late 2021, he announced he would not run for re-election
(a new congressional map had eliminated his district),
and a few months later his party voted to censure him.
At one point in the movie, the House minority leader at the time, Kevin McCarthy, refers to Kinzinger and Cheney as “Pelosi Republicans.”
Kinzinger reserves his most passionate anger in “The Last Republican” for McCarthy,
whom he sees as weak and traitorous for changing his behavior toward Trump.
But Kinzinger is as frustrated with his party as he is steadfast in his conservative Christian convictions,
pro-military views and socially traditional beliefs.
Now, without occupying an elected position, he feels comfortable letting loose.
That turns out to be why the movie works.
Pink is on the political left;
when Kinzinger half-jokingly dubs him “basically a Communist” near the film’s start, Pink corrects him.
“Progressive,” he says, and they carry on.
They talk about why Kinzinger chose to allow Pink to follow him and his staff through their final months in Congress,
which boils down to a hilarious fact:
Pink directed the 2010 comedy
“Hot Tub Time Machine,”
which Kinzinger declares a “cinematic masterpiece.”
There’s clearly some shared sensibility between the two men even if,
as they both freely admit,
they have no respect for each other’s beliefs.
More than Kinzinger’s story,
this is why “The Last Republican” is worth watching.
At times it seems like exhortations to “reach across the aisle” and “heal political divisions” have become platitudes, clichés without any firm ideas about how that might be accomplished.
But the combative camaraderie that Pink and Kinzinger demonstrate respects both of them as humans
— without softening their stances one bit.
I hope to see more films like this one in the years to come.

Biden urges port operators to increase wages after 45,000 workers go on strike
Joe Biden has urged port operators to give workers a “meaningful increase” in pay after tens of thousands went on strike,
prompting some of the busiest ports in the US to brace for crippling disruption.
About 45,000 port workers represented by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) began walking off the job after their contracts expired at midnight,
with 36 ports along the east and Gulf coasts affected.
They typically handle about half of the nation’s ocean shipping.
Talks over a new contract between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have broken down,
and the union dismissed a last-ditch offer from operators hours before the strike was due to began.
Hours after the strike began, the White House issued a robust statement calling on USMX to negotiate a “fair” contract that reflects “the substantial contribution” of ports workers to America’s economy.
Ports-strike CEO’s crude attacks on Biden and Democrats
An executive representing ports where tens of thousands of workers went on strike this week
made a series of critical and crude remarks about Joe Biden,
tied Kamala Harris to concerns about over-taxation,
and appeared to endorse a rightwing conspiracy theory.
#David #Adam, chairman and chief executive of the United States Maritime Alliance ( #USMX ), attacked prominent Democrats in a string of social media posts uncovered by the Guardian.
It comes after about 45,000 dockworkers at ports along the US east and Gulf coasts walked off the job
– the first such strike since 1977
– as part of a dispute between the USMX and the International Longshoremen’s Association over pay and automation.
The sweeping strike,
disrupting 36 ports from Maine to Texas,
has already raised fears of supply shortages and price increases on the eve of November’s election.
A month ago, when a LinkedIn user suggested that “everything Biden has touched in the past is turning to shit!” -- Adam replied: “The runny kind….”
It was part of a discussion about how Biden’s student-debt relief plan was being held up in the courts.
In another comment on the thread, Adam wrote: “If ya can’t get an American Democrat to pay what they borrrowed [sic], how you gonna get a California illegal immigrant to pay back their $150K loan the CA Dems are offering?”
Three months ago, another user appeared to endorse a popular conspiracy theory surrounding the emergence of a totalitarian world government while commenting on a video of Biden discussing immigration. -- “Did I miss the vote America took in agreement of One World Order? Treasonous actions have consequences!” they wrote.
“I think Kerry and Gates voted two thumbs up on that a few years ago …” Adam replied.
Much to the consternation of his Federalist Society colleagues,
Leo had also begun cannibalizing the organization’s own deep-pocketed donors to help finance some of his more personal initiatives
— and those of his friends.
In 2010, he co-founded along with Ginni Thomas an organization called "Liberty Central";
Thomas was the wife of his good friend Justice Clarence Thomas and they used a $500,000 donation from Dallas real estate billionaire #Harlan #Crow,
also a donor to the Federalist Society.
The group billed itself as “America’s Public Square,” promising to preserve freedom and reaffirm the core principles of the Founding Fathers.
The following year, he joined the board of "Chicago Freedom Trust", which had been set up by manufacturing billionaire #Barre #Seid as a pass-through
to anonymously channel funds to initiatives he wished to support
and to take advantage of the recent #Citizens #United ruling shielding big donors from disclosure.
Leo met Seid through #Eugene #Meyer, president of the Federalist Society, who envisioned the wealthy manufacturing tycoon as a potential donor to the law society.
Instead, Leo cultivated him as a funder of his own dark-money network.
The move brought Leo into contact with other central figures of the conservative dark-money world
— like #Whitney #Ball and #Adam #Meyerson,
the main actors behind #DonorsTrust, who were responsible for anonymously funneling hundreds of millions of dollars to various conservative grassroot groups,
including some linked to the far right.
He also used his influence there to divert funds to Opus Dei, with the pass-through soon becoming a regular donor to the Oakcrest School.
As Leo’s access to the world of dark money grew, his Opus Dei friends the Corkerys became critical as a front for the tens of millions of dollars streaming through Leo’s hidden network of nonprofits.
Neil and Ann had provided crucial cover for him during the campaign to secure the confirmations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito in 2005,
hiding the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent to influence public opinion.
As more dark money poured in starting in 2010, they began to do the same again through various nonprofits such as the "Wellspring Committee" and the "Judicial Crisis Network".
Their importance only grew following Scalia’s death,
as Leo pumped his network for ever larger sums.
In the weeks after Scalia’s death, the Corkerys began opening the purse strings in what would eventually become a $17 million campaign to stop Obama from replacing Scalia
and instead ensure a reliable conservative filled the vacancy.
It was just the start.
Over the next five years, Leo and the Corkerys would oversee the transfer of almost $600 million of dark money to right-wing causes.
Their hidden ecosystem would eventually enable a conservative takeover of the Supreme Court that would disassemble
hard-won civil rights and turn back the clock on issues close to their hearts
— on abortion,
on affirmative action,
and on vast swathes of what they saw as a progressive agenda.

Since the start of the year, there have been
$723 million worth of campaign ad buys
for just three Senate races:
in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Montana, according to AdImpact data.
A fierce battle for control of the Senate is fueling the expected record-breaking ad spending this election cycle.
The investment so far points to the races both parties deem most critical for the majority.
Democrats have long held a fundraising advantage over Republicans, which is helping them play defense in nine competitive Senate races.
Ohio is the only Senate race in which Republicans have been spending more than Democrats on campaign ads and reservations
— though this is largely due to it having one of the only highly competitive Senate GOP primaries this year.
Republican Bernie Moreno won the Ohio primary and will face Democratic incumbent Sen. #Sherrod #Brown in November.
The showdowns between Sen. #Bob #Casey (D) and Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania
and Sen. #Jon #Tester (D) and Tim Sheehy in Montana
come in second and third for ad spending and booking for both parties, so far.
The $70.5 million of spending in California was driven by heated Senate primary. Rep. #Adam #Schiff (D-Calif.) is expected to have an easy general election in November.
Totals include ad reservations made so far through Election Day, though those reservations are expected to keep coming.

#Dark #energy was assumed to be a #constant force in the universe, both currently and throughout cosmic history.
But new data suggest that it may be more changeable, growing stronger or weaker over time, reversing or even fading away.
“As #Biden would say, it’s a B.F.D.,” said #Adam #Riess, an astronomer at Johns Hopkins University and the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.
Riess shared the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics with two other astronomers for the discovery of dark energy, but was not involved in this new study.
“It may be the first real clue we have gotten about the nature of dark energy in 25 years,” he said.
If the work of dark energy were constant over time, it would eventually push all the stars and galaxies so far apart that even atoms could be torn asunder, sapping the universe of all life, light, energy and thought.
Instead, it appears, dark energy is capable of changing course and pointing the cosmos toward a richer future.
Wendy Freedman, an astrophysicist at the University of Chicago who has led efforts to measure the expansion of the universe, praised the new survey as “superb data.”
The results, she said, “open the potential for a new window into understanding dark energy, the dominant component of the universe, which remains the biggest mystery in cosmology
Physicists have deduced subtle hints that the 
#dark #energy that drives the universe to expand faster and faster may be slightly #weakening with time.
“If true, it would be the first real clue we have gotten about the nature of dark energy in 25 years,” said #Adam #Riess, an astrophysicist at Johns Hopkins University 
who won the Nobel Prize for co-discovering dark energy in 1998.
The new observations come from the 
Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument ( #DESI ) team, which today unveiled a #map of the cosmos of unprecedented scope, along with a bonanza of measurements derived from the map.
To many researchers, the highlight is a plot showing that three different combinations of observations all insinuate that the influence of dark energy may have eroded over the eons.
“It’s possible we’re seeing hints of dark energy evolving,” said Dillon Brout of Boston University, a member of the DESI team.
Researchers inside and outside of the collaboration all stress that the evidence is not strong enough to claim a discovery.
The observations favor the erosion of dark energy with the sort of middling statistical significance that could easily vanish with additional data.
But researchers also note that three distinct sets of observations all point in the same intriguing direction, one that’s at odds with the standard picture of dark energy as the intrinsic energy of the vacuum of space
— the quantity that Albert Einstein dubbed the “cosmological constant” due to its unvarying nature.
“It’s exciting,” said Sesh Nadathur, a cosmologist at the University of Portsmouth who worked on the DESI analysis. “If dark energy is not a cosmological constant, that’s going to be a huge discovery.”
