When needed, the deciduous tree pulls energy from its roots and up to the bare buds curled up tightly against a harsh environment...and the small leaves inside draw strength and burst through the bud scale barriers.
They start small, but grow larger and larger, producing energy that feeds the tree they belong to, and recharges the roots against future harsh events.

@saxbrightwell Probably hard to get the ideal of both. There are usually, sacrifices when breeding for an all-round crop like that because some genes don't neatly segregate when breeding. Probably not impossible to do for home growing, but unlikely to be picked up commercially due to those sacrifices.

For those who haven't seen almonds in the field before, you can see the similarity to peaches. They're closely related and can hybridize with each other.
The flesh is much thinner and has been bred to split open towards the end of the season. It's bred for its seed, not the fruit. #Horticulture #Almond
I haven't yet figured out a great way to do scale for bud dissections.
I have calibrated the microscope camera software, but that only works for flat slides. These are 3-dimensional items where the camera foreshortens. 1 mm measured on the dissection stage is not the same as a couple inches up on the modeling clay I use to hold things.

"The health impacts of glyphosate are disputed and the CDC report makes no observation about what the detected levels mean in terms of human health outcomes. However, its work comes at a time of mounting concerns and controversy over how #pesticides in #food and #water impact human and #environmental health.
"Both the amount and prevalence of glyphosate found in human urine has been rising steadily since the 1990s when #Monsanto Co. introduced genetically engineered crops designed to be sprayed directly with Roundup, according to research published in 2017 by University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers.
"Paul Mills, the lead researcher of that study, said at the time there was 'an urgent need' for a thorough examination of the impact on human health from glyphosate in foods people commonly consume.
"More than 200 million pounds of glyphosate are used annually by #US #farmers on their fields. The weedkiller is sprayed directly over genetically engineered crops such as #corn and #soybeans, and also over non-genetically engineered crops such as #wheat and #oats as a desiccant to dry crops out prior to harvest. Many farmers also use it on fields before the growing season, including #spinach growers and #almond producers. It is considered the most widely used herbicide in history.

The #almond (#PrunusAmygdalus) is a tree native to Iran and surrounding countries. Pics taken in this moment.
The almond is also the name of the edible and cultivated seed of this tree.
I have previously observed and posted pink inflorescence from this species of tree.
These whites are just as elegant!
Oh, and they did this while #OliveTrees are dying from blight (Xylella fastidiosa bacterium) and #ClimateChange. Basically, a crime against fellow humans and nature!

"Israeli forces on Monday uprooted and destroyed some 2,000 olive trees in the #Palestinian village of Qarawat Bani Hassan in the northern occupied West Bank, according to local media.
"Ibrahim Assi, the mayor of Qarawat Bani Hassan, said soldiers stormed al-Awarid, an area north of the village, declared it a closed military zone, then proceeded to bulldoze the area, of around 300 dunams (o.3 square km), in an operation that lasted for more than five hours.
"Assi said Israeli forces destroyed stone walls, 'stole the olive trees they uprooted", and sprayed chemical #pesticides over #olive, #grape and #almond saplings.
"The olive harvest season, which runs between October and November, is a lifeline for 80,000 to 100,000 Palestinian families in the occupied West Bank."
