I highly recommend Obtainium. It is a great way of installing and updating applications onto your Android phone. Instead of being a central store, you add the source for each project (from Github, Gitlab, Codeberg, etc) for the applications you use. It is the only "store" I added on my GrapheneOS phone. It allows absolute granular control of what I choose to install from the source; true digital intentional-ism.

Main: obtainium.imranr.dev/
Source: github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium

Also, here is a list of "complex applications" to make it easier to add them to Obtainium: apps.obtainium.imranr.dev/

Quick tip: turn browser sticky notes into permanent notes!

Got a brilliant idea on your browser's sticky note widget? Don't let it disappear! ✨

Here's how to save it permanently:

- Click the 3-dot menu on your sticky note
- Select "Save to a Note"

Now your thought is saved and easily accessible from your Notes Panel. If you have Sync enabled, it'll be available across all your devices too! ✔️

One thing that really pisses me off personally is the #regression in terms of #Messenger #Apps.

My personal distaste and dislike for #proprietary, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider #services like #Signal ¹, #Telegram, #Discord ², #WhatsApp ³, #Slack, #MicrosoftTeams, etc. aside:

  • WHY is there no #CrossProvider #Messenger to handle that shite?

  • WHY does everyone of these shitty providers think people want to download their #bloated #WebApp that takes up triple digit Megabytes if not entire Gigabytes and will gobble up all the #RAM and #CPU each of them can??

This problem ain't new and already got solved for corporate social media ages ago! (Not to mention actually good messengers!)

So yeah, consider this a call for a @gajim / #Gajim or @pidgin / #Pidgin for garbage platforms!

  • Cuz back in the day we had way worse messengers yet people actually made #AIM, #ICQ, #MSN, #QQ, #IRC & #XMPP work just fine from one single "phat" client!

  • Can we please get that back?

What's with this new fashion of referring to web sites as "apps"?

It's bad enough when people refer to all programs as "apps" without having web sites being called "apps" too.

Anyone know about this app, called Dust? (Note: I don't think it's the secure messaging app). It's apparently for regional burns (mini-Burning Man events). A burn I'm attending is going to do all their organizing, messaging, mapping, etc. using the Dust app.

I fucking hate apps. I mean, some are okay. I hate everything in the world shoving an app at you, mostly because nearly every such app requires a significant chunk of personal data, then needs permissions it shouldn't have, and almost certainly resells my data or keeps it just in case the company needs extra cash.

So... how do I find this stuff out? It's not a major app; maybe a few thousand or tens of thousands of people ever use it, so I'm not finding any info about it by online searching. Admittedly, my google-fu (well, ddg-fu) might be lacking.

If you have any info about how predatory or chill this app is, or hints where I can find such info, I hope you'll share.

I'm writing a piece for my personal newsletter/blog (which you can find at exposed.ishotjr.com/ ) about independent and #OpenSource alternatives to #BigTech. Many of us here fled other #SocialMedia platforms as #enshittification (and often worse!) set in, and found greener pastures on #Mastodon, as well as switching to #Pixelfed for posting pics, #Kagi for our search needs, etc. — what other #tools, #apps, and #services do you use and recommend? Please #BoostForReach if you are able! 🤘💗🤘

Moin ins #fediverse
