France consolidates its position as the world's second-largest arms exporter.

The US remains by far the leading supplier to the international war market, according to the annual report on trade in military equipment by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

Ukraine has become the leading buyer of weapons, driven to rearm by the Russian threat.

Calls for #European #military strengthening are growing, and while building a domestic #arms industry would be ideal, the #us arms industry is unlikely to support such efforts, given how much Europe contributes to its business. The same applies to other key industries - without Europe, who would the #US trade with?

Ultimately, Europe must ignore the noise coming from the #trump administration and recognize its own economic #superpower status - and start acting accordingly on the global stage.

Its not just commentators talking about Military Keynsianism (see earlier post), in the last six weeks BAE Systems - Europe's largest arms manufacturer & sixth largest in the world (the top five are American) - has seen its share price rise by around 40%; Thales (a French arms firm) has seen its shares rise by 20% in the same period.

'investors' (speculators?) have heard the commentary & think Govts will be ramping up defence spending after Trump's declarations on NATO.

[CW video: high rising emotions]

From Amsterdam Student Encampment:

"Monday, October 21st, activists disrupted the Defense Committee meeting taking place in the House of Representatives. This meeting was discussing a deal approved by the House of Representatives in which up to 250 million euros will be spent on Rafael, an ''Israeli'' arms manufacturer that actively contributed to the murder of more than 43,000 Palestinians in Gaza, 2,300 people in Lebanon and many others in Iraq , Syria and Yemen. Whilst the attendees of this meeting were confronted with the genocidal consequences of their decisions, they watched it happen with emotionless expression and laughter.

At one point, one of the representatives said that no activist can stop this deal. We say to this, we will not rest until we stop this deal!"
