'Britain and other European countries can disrupt smuggling networks and raise the cost of doing business, although unfortunately they are likely to make cross-channel journeys more lethal in the process.'

Iranian refugee: “If you think the smugglers are bad people, I agree with you. It’s a long and unsafe journey, a dangerous journey. But do you think it’s possible to go to the British embassy in Iran and get a visa?”

“He took information that was publicly available but labor-intensive to compile, and did something nobody else was doing...I don’t know if he expected this second career to make him basically the world’s only credible public source on U.S. deportation flights, just as they were becoming part of one of the United States’ biggest national news stories.”

Back in the courtroom At attorney Prada’s request the judge froze Reyes Mota’s #asylum case for the time being. That way, he could eventually take it up again. That is, if he is ever able to return to the #UnitedStates.

“We can agree that there was no removal order from this court or another court,” the judge said, noting that there was very little he could do.

He has no tattoos & his family members deny he has any gang ties. Had Reyes Mota still been in the #US, his #asylum hearing would have been a commonplace matter. But his absence showcases the remarkable nature of the #Venezuelans#deportation to #ElSalvador. As attys argue the flights were unlawful & violated a federal judge’s order, the #immigration court is navigating the case of an asylum seeker w/pending immigration proceedings whom #Trump flew to another country w/o #DueProcess.

@uc Well, I have thought that as well, if the U.S. federal government is going to break all the U.S. departments and agencies that actually do anything for the people, and/or threaten governors and legislators in those state, why should the states do anything for the federal government? But beyond that, I would not be terribly shocked if some states, especially those adjacent to #Canada, get the bright idea to secede and ask to join Canada. To do that, they would have to adopt a "you're with us or you're out" mentality, because there will be Nazis and other #Trump supporters in every state, and they will need to be shown the same level of respect that Trump gives to immigrants he doesn't like: Either self-deport from the state, or we'll forcibly deport you and your family, and you might not like where we send you. If you leave voluntarily you can take your car(s) and as many possession as you can haul out (or arrange to have shipped out), and maybe make a life for yourself in a red state. We'll even escort you to the state line if we have to. Obviously this is not an ideal situation but at that point the states that want to secede will essentially be at war with the U.S. federal government.

I could see that scenario play out in a whole bunch of ways, some of which might have dire outcomes, but others that might result in Canada adding a considerable amount of territory *and the manufacturing capability within that territory*. For example, if Michigan were to secede, there are already facilities there that could easily start making tanks and similar equipment that Canada could use in any war against the #USA. If Washington state were to secede, there are facilities there that could start cranking out fighter aircraft (whether they would not suddenly fall out of the sky is another matter, though). And if, by some chance, New York State were to secede (which I think highly unlikely, but let's go with it for a moment), well that is the financial and communications capital of North America (formerly the world).

If you had asked me a couple of years ago if anything like that were possible I would have said "never in a million years", but as we have seen things that we would have never thought possible in the USA have been occurring with frightening speed. And I suspect that right now there are a whole lot of Americans that would much rather be Canadians, particularly if they didn't have to move to a new location. But we will see how this all plays out.

(One question, will there ever come a time when Canada recognizes US citizens as #asylum seekers? There are many Americans that would be too old, too young, or have too little in income or assets to easily qualify under current immigration law. But they might still want to serve Canada in some way if there is ever an actual war with the USA. Just something to think about)

But it is, Tim: America now is that kind of country. Some 77 million of us eagerly voted to turn it into that kind of country.

~15 declarations were filed overnight in #JGGvTrump. You can read them in the latest filing. The sworn declarations are from attys whose clients were not gang members but because #Trump suspended #HabeasCorpus / #DueProcess under the #AlienEnemiesAct they were scooped up by #ICE, flown to a country w/which they had no association & thrown into a high max forced labor #terrorist detention center. All had complied w/ #immigration #law & had pending hearings seeking #asylum.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, a Brazilian congressman and a son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, said on Tuesday that he would seek political asylum in the United States, claiming he is the target of persecution for defending the right-wing movement embodied by his father.

The third-oldest son of the former Brazilian president has been in the United States since late February, just as Brazil’s Supreme Court began weighing whether to seize his passport over accusations that he tried to interfere in the case involving his father’s alleged role in a coup plot after the older man lost the 2022 election.

Mr. Bolsonaro, 40, said in a video posted on social media that he intended to remain in the United States and step back from his role as a federal lawmaker. Mr. Bolsonaro has close ties with the Trump family and has visited President Trump at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida home and club.

Mr. Bolsonaro also denounced a Supreme Court justice, Alexandre de Moraes, for targeting him. Justice de Moraes has been overseeing the criminal case against Jair Bolsonaro.

“If Alexandre de Moraes wants to seize my passport or even arrest me so that I can no longer report his crimes in the United States, then this is precisely where I will stay and work harder than ever,” the younger Mr. Bolsonaro said in the video.

After the video was published, Brazil’s top prosecutor said he was not seeking Mr. Bolsonaro’s passport.

Mr. Bolsonaro did not make clear when he would request asylum. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The announcement by Mr. Bolsonaro comes days before Brazil’s Supreme Court is to decide whether to put his father on trial on charges that he oversaw a vast plot to subvert the nation’s democracy after the 2022 election, which he lost.

Brazilian prosecutors say the plot included plans to annul the vote, disband courts and assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who won the vote. The older Mr. Bolsonaro has called the charges politically motivated.

Eduardo Bolsonaro said his father ran the risk of being “unjustly imprisoned” by the Supreme Court, which has long been seen as an enemy by Brazil’s conservative movement, and drew a parallel between his father and Mr. Trump’s own legal troubles.

“I have no doubt that our enemies’ plan is to incarcerate him, to assassinate him in prison or leave him there forever, just as would have happened with Donald Trump if he had not been re-elected in 2024,” he said in the video.

Mr. Trump’s media company has sued Justice Moraes, accusing him of illegally censoring right-wing voices on social media.

After the interview, Toczylowski received confirmation from the US government that her client was deported to El Salvador as part of the #AlienEnemiesAct sweep. Toczylowski says her client is not a Tren deAragua member & that ICE misidentified his tatoos.

During the Vietnam War, Pierre Trudeau famously welcomed American draft dodgers and conscientious objectors to Canada. It created many (unique!) communities in this country that continue to be unique and valuable to this day.

Should Canada actively welcome American immigrants/refugees, or is it different this time?
