For #bloomscrolling I wanted to share the beauty of these #azalea bushes I encountered on my walk today in Downtown #BatonRouge. These are an old-fashioned variety growing in front of a historic home. #Azaleas are amazing right now, they always make #spring in the #south extra special. Most of the year they are just a shrub, but at this time they are glorious.

Our #roses are entertaining us, while #azaleas are in their final stage.
I hope everyone had a peaceful start of the week, too.
Known as 'tsutsuji' (躑躅/つつじ) in Japanese, azaleas were first cultivated in Japan in the Kamakura period (there are around 40 original varieties).
Their popularity really took off in Edo times, and the flowers can now be found growing in every corner of the city.
Just intended to take a walk, but the #shrine Nagaoka Tenjin (長岡天満宮) had not only its trademark red #azaleas but also the first #wisteria I've seen blossoming this year. So after most of my life in #Japan, I was back in #tourist mode snapping #photos. Some local people struck up a conversation, unusual not because it was in #Japanese but because Japanese usually don't talk to strangers. The answer was that they turned out to be Jehovah's Witnesses!
