Signal is currently testing 'cloud' backups with the staging version of the Android app.

Details:

  • Fully end-to-end encrypted (duh),
  • Free and paid tiers - free supports unlimited messages and media up to 45 days, paid is $1,99/mo for 100GB,
  • This does NOT replace the local backup.

In fact, the local backup is getting a revamp too! :flan_hurrah: It will gain cross-platform support (iOS <=> Android), changed format (taking seconds rather than minutes) and external syncing tools (like Nextcloud) will be faster too.

It's hard to believe that such a prestigious research facility didn't maintain offsite backups of their documentation (data, experiment technical references and reports, etc.).

The IT manager in me is appalled at the idea that no one was responsible for creating and maintaining off-site backups. Hopefully, the story is written for emotional effect and omitting relevant information.

Stop trusting cloud service providers so much.

This screenshot from a post on Threads is a great example of the kinds of real-world problems people (and companies) experience when they use a cloud-only architecture, through ignorance or intentional design.

Every person, and every company, needs to design their data systems architecture so that they have local control of all data. Put it in the cloud if it’s essential to your business operations, sure, but keep local copies as well.

We live in a time when most systems architects don’t even consider off-cloud elements in their design. It literally does not occur to them. When I do crisis support for companies after a ransomware attack, it’s gotten to the point where I expect them to say “no” when I ask them, “Do you have any offline copies of your data?”

(Description of screenshot: a woman posted on Threads that she lost access to her Microsoft account through a combination of events, some of which she could have prevented, and now it will be thirty days before Microsoft will allow her access to her files).

Bought a new USB SATA drive dock for data backups. I popped in the drive I use for periodically imaging my main desktop, but it wouldn't show up. Tried another USB port. Still nothing.

Then I checked drive management: there was, of course, a signature conflict between the C: drive and the drive containing the image of the same. D'oh!

Booted from a thumb drive, and Clonezilla is now chugging away! This dock is much easier than using my old USB adapter kit with its multiple wires. #Backups

I’m looking for backup advice. I have 4 macOS devices I currently back up. A total of around 20TB. I currently use BackBlaze but was looking to replace it. I’d like to use Arq with a cheaper backend.

I looked at Wasabi cloud storage but that is pretty expensive ($140/month).

Suggestions?

Decided not to renew my annual BackBlaze subscription. Last night I deleted my account (and online backup).

Today I'll stop by the bank to retrieve my backup drive from our safety deposit box. It's a bit of a nuisance, but doable quarterly.

I still do local backups regularly, of course. #Backups

wie sichert ihr eigentlich eure Daten vom Handy?

also insbesondere die Android Fraktion.

so as part of my #selfhosting journey I hit my first (expected) accidental blowing-away of important stuff.
Still, I learned that the full-system #backups being written off to my NAS could indeed be restored quickly and easily.
Also, read the doco.
