A bit of sunshine, and suddenly all is well – and considerably warmer – on the canal.

A row of hire boats floating in a basin that's perfectly still. The boats are seen head on. Their bows are reflected in the water.
Behind them is a manual lift bridge and some trees. The sky is light blue with some clouds. It's reflection in the water is even bluer.

It was the moment for a little basin time after so much range. I stopped by the Wayne E. Kirch Wilderness Management Area and spent some time with Hot Creek and its special collection of wildlife.

A sticker marked "Basin and Range Trail - Nevada Scenic Trail" adorns a pole that is part of a squeeze point through a fence on the way across a flat area of sage and sand. The sand is really trail. In the distance is a sudden rise of a small butte, but otherwise there's nothing until mountains so far away they are almost lost in the thickness of air.

A turquoise pool lined with rocks among the brown grasses of the winter desert. This is the designated swimming area at Hot Creek. The pole of a stream gauge transmitter is seen on the far side. The land is flat until some very distant mountains that rise quickly and are topped, almost touching, with the only clouds in the sky.

White River springfish swim through a light blue water with green algae and sand below. The fish is about as long as a finger, a short one, with stripes along its length. Dark in the middle and top, tan above the middle, and silver otherwise.

Her steps echoed in the dark room as she walked in, the lantern in her hands not enough to fight against the thick shadows. She reached the edge of the basin and bent down. A hand went into the slimy liquid, the other went on her forehead and the room was bathed in blue light as her mana flowed from her to the basin. Soon, the lights went out, both the dim yellow of the lantern and the bright blue of her mana and no more sounds were heard again.

Smells, acrid, chemical: shit, piss, urinal cakes and chlorine, thickening the air around me; the whomp of bass makes pools of water shiver on scratched laminate. Hands either side of the #basin I spit, clear the taste of vomit, imagine the red-eyed, manic, sex-god in the long-removed mirror. “YOU LOOK FINE,” witty scrawl in marker. Better than fine: I’m Fucking Amazing. Splash my face, push out the door into the wall of sound and heat and sweat…
