Why do most bats fly only at night? Is it because they're afraid of birds of prey? If so, do they try to avoid owls?

Turns out the answers are not that clear cut, as @JKRevell explains in the latest article on #Synapsida

(I like that parts of the old internet like the Synapsida blog are still going strong, and I can subscribe to their RSS feeds and read interesting and ad-free and AI-free content. *Big thanks* go to those that are still adding quality content to the internet with the aim of informing us instead of making money or manipulating what we think.)

Why do Kier Starmer & Rachel Reeves hate Britain's bats so much? They repeatedly cite the "£100m bat tunnel" on HS2 in support of their position. It wasn't the bats that necessitated that expenditure, it was the decision to drive HS2 railline through greenfield countryside, & the associated necessity of ensuring the High Speed train windscreens were not plastered with the entrails of thousands of smashed up bats. Drop it Labour. It's boring.

My fav photo so far from some bat mist netting earlier this month. "Smile for the camera boys, smile & wave..." from the penguins in Madagascar comes to mind every time I see it, haha. This is a Big Brown Bat.

(note 1: vaccinated and working under permit - do not otherwise handle wildlife!)

(note 2: i did not take this photo, only did some shadow enhancement to clear up the bat, i can't remember who took it as we took photos of each other haha)

Good morning you lovely lot 💕 I am back home and up early with the parrots and have had a lovely long cuddle with Ziggy, who has stopped biting me, so it looks like I have been forgiven for going away and leaving her 😊 Yesterday you could tell she was excited to see me, but she had to make her displeasure known by running down my arm, biting my hand, and running up to my shoulder again. She did this a few times to really make her feelings known! All good now though - we're pals again.

I'm so happy to see that our bats are back! Last year there were not many and we were getting worried when they didn't show up in April this year, but they have arrived in their numbers again now, which makes me very happy ☺️ Soon there will be baby bats too 🦇

Off to post two crochet toy orders this morning and then maybe some gaming. Will see how it goes

Have a lovely day, whatever you get up to 🤗

We used to see #bats regularly in the summer, but for the last 2-3 years we've seen fewer and fewer. I miss seeing them, so I made a bat box, hoping that might make our yard seem more hospitable. It's amazing what a small space bats like (at least according to the various online directions I found). We'll see if it works.
