They said natural variations in ocean currents that limit ice melting had probably balanced out the continuing rise in global temperatures. However, this was only a temporary reprieve and melting was highly likely to start again at about double the long-term rate at some point in 5-10yr.
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/aug/20/slowdown-in-melting-of-arctic-sea-ice-surprises-scientists

Experiment will attempt to counter #climatechange by altering #ocean
“If we really want to have a shot at mitigating the worst effects of climate change, #carbon removal needs to start scaling to the point where it can supplement large-scale #emissions reductions,” said Adam Subhas, an associate scientist in marine #chemistry and #geochemistry at the #WoodsHole #Oceanographic Institution (#WHOI), who will oversee the week-long experiment.

@harold

The costs of transitioning to the new energy is TRIVIAL compared to the costs of global climate destruction.

And. The costs of removing carbon from the atmosphere are bigger.

Canada has oil, if Canada sells and burns its reserves, it would cost far more than trillions to remove it. If they can get the price down.

Tiny creature gorges, gets fat, and locks up planet-warming #carbon
These "unsung heroes" called #zooplankton gorge themselves and grow fat in spring before sinking hundreds of metres into the deep #ocean in Antarctica where they burn the fat.
This locks away as much planet-warming carbon as the annual #emissions of roughly 55 million petrol cars, stopping it from further warming our atmosphere, according to researchers.

#Climate-protecting #carbon sinks of #EU #forests are declining

Forests cover around 40 percent of the EU's land area. Between 1990 and 2022, they absorbed around 10 percent of the continent's man-made carbon emissions. However, the #CO2 absorption capacity of forests, also known as carbon sinks, is becoming increasingly weaker. This is shown by calculations of multi-year carbon budgets by an international team of researchers in a recent Nature study. idw-online.de/en/news856239

#California’s #carbon market reaches an inflection point
The poor auction performance compounds California's existing $12 billion budget deficit, as the state relies on #carboncredit revenues to fund #climate programs. Governor Gavin Newsom is pushing to reauthorize the program through the annual budget bill, which must pass by mid-June, but lawmakers are debating fundamental changes to pricing mechanisms and spending priorities.
