🔥 🔥🔥There is NO cybersecurity skills gap. 🔥🔥🔥

What we’re seeing is late stage capitalism. Mass layoffs. RTO mandates. Federal positions eliminated. Gov’t contracts slashed.

Highly qualified cybersecurity professionals - people with decades of experience, degrees, certifications, security clearances, leadership experience - are out of work right now!

And yet, people are still out here pushing “just get a cyber cert,” or “go get a cybersecurity degree,” as if that’s going to solve anything. It won’t!

This isn’t a skills problem. It’s an economic problem!

Look at the CEO-to-worker pay ratio. Look at how shareholder profits and quarterly earnings are the only thing that matter in boardrooms.

Companies would rather lay off entire cybersecurity teams than risk slightly lower short-term profits. It’s unsustainable! It has been for years!

White collar technical fields have been largely insulated from this before - but now?

We’re in the “Find Out” stage of the capitalism FAFO cycle.

If you’re struggling right now: It is not you. It’s not your skills. It’s not your résumé!

It’s the system! We're in a bad system and the system needs fixed holistically.

To any US service members who were recently discharged for reasons which would not have been an issue in 2024: I want to help how I can. It's not much, but I can assist with updating and reviewing resumes as well as providing mock interviews. Depending what your background is, I might be able to lean on my network to help further.

You served your country under great hardship, and you've earned better treatment than you are receiving.

🎓 PhD-Talk with Lennart Schürmann 🗣️

What was your greatest experience during your #PhD? What were the most challenging moments? What is your advice for people who are interested in an PhD? Lennart Schürmann provides insights into his #PhDjourney at Fraunhofer UMSICHT. He has been working on his #dissertation in our Energy Systems department since April 2020. His focus is on modeling and optimizing energy systems.

And now for something completely different. . .

If you're aware of any software/SaaS startups that could use an experienced senior leader in sort of a "figure out what needs to be done and do it" role, please pont them at me! Consulting or full time. Thanks. 🤓

I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

@sans_isc GIAC has published their 2025 #Cybersecurity Workforce Research Report.

A few interesting facts:

👉 34% of organizations prioritize teamwork and collaboration over just technical skills when hiring.

👉 65% of organizations require cybersecurity professionals to validate skills externally and 58% use certification for internal career progression.

👉 51% of organizations prefer to upskill and cross-train their workforce rather than rely on external hiring.

I didn't see ANY references to #AI and that seems encouraging! Also, a disclaimer -- there are 2 IBM employees who were interviewed for this report. I work for IBM, but was in no way involved in producing this report. I'm only promoting it because it was interesting to me. :blobangel:

I asked a Harvard postdoc which skills are essential to thrive as a researcher in AI & Biomedicine:

His answer:
:blobcoffee: Cultivate abstract thinking.
:blobcoffee: Build solid foundations instead of chasing hypes.
:blobcoffee: Think independently, embrace a do-it mindset, stay curious and persistent.

Knowledge is accessible. Thinking is up to us.

What skills are you trying to develop?

Just got to endure the largest dump of nonsense in my face ever. As a training I got advised to attend, since I am registered as unemployed, I went to an event "finding a job with AI".

My worst expectations were exceeded. These were two people who were proud to tell that, thanks to #AI, they built their start-up (which aims to tell people about #career-opportunities in AI) within a couple of months!

# Switching to #linux was the best decision of my life, and i'm not exaggerating.

I've learned more in the past four years than in seven years of using #windows. What i've learned is valuable and useful. And i regret nothing but that i didn't switch earlier.

Switching to linux doesn't have to be fun. It will be exhausting, time consuming and frustrating at most times. And this is exactly what you should want.

Trying, breaking and fixing things are essential parts of your learning process. Daily driving linux is a daily learning experience.

I have a #learningdisorder which made me feel useless to the #IT industry. This year i had an internship which changed that completely. My #impostersyndrome and doubts are gone. And i can't even describe how good this feels.
